    Great little banjo

I bought this for my 8 year old daughter for her birthday so i could have my banjo back! The shorter scale and simpler construction makes for a quieter and easier-to-handle instrument for her to learn on. This is a good value in a travel size/children's banjo. The construction is decent albeit this is NOT a high end banjo(i.e. No tone ring, plywood pot). The hardware is satisfactory and the instrument stays in tune fairly well(for a banjo). You will need to do some reading up on banjo setup to get it playing well. I have been playing and working on instruments for some years so I was expecting to have to tinker with it when I got it. It was a lot easier than I though it would be.When you unpack the banjo the bridge is not installed. The strings are on the banjo which saves some time. Here's what I did:1. Unpack instrument and layout parts and tools(included in the package)2. Unscrew the 4 thumb screws and remove the resonator.3. Tighten the brackets(mine came with a real Remo head) evenly until the head is fairly tight.4. Put the resonator back on.5. Measure from the nut to the 12th fret and record the measurement.6. Measure from the 12th fret toward the tailpiece the same distance you previously measured and make a light pencil mark on the head. This is a starting position for the bridge.7. slide the bridge under the strings, stand it up and align the strings with the slots, make sure the string looks even going down the fret board.8. Tighten the tailpiece.9. Tune the low D and High D strings up to pitch10. On each string: Strike a harmonic at the 12th fret, then fret the string and play it. The two notes should match. If the fretted note is sharp move the bridge toward the tailpiece. If the fretted note is flat move the bridge toward the fret board. Once they both match tune up the banjo to standard banjo tuning.Again this is a great little instrument. I often pick it up and play it because it's quieter than mine and it gives a nice old-timey sound if you're a frailing/clawhammer player. I gave it 4 out of five stars because while it is a good value for the money it is an instrument that will be outgrown in terms of tone and playability once the learner has progressed to playing with other people.

His music instructor said it sounded a lot better than he expected

We bought this for our son to start banjo lessons. His music instructor said it sounded a lot better than he expected. Another banjo player there also complimented it and wanted to know where we bought it so he could buy one for his grandson. So far it is working great for our son to use for banjo lessons!
