## Description

The Shimano Altus SL-M315 Shifter offers light shifting operation, wide compatibility options, and is suitable for internal cable routing.

Review: Economically Priced mountain Bike Shifter - Out of the box this shifter works fantastic. Installation was a breeze. It comes with the shift wire already attached. The right grip, brake lever and old shifter have to be removed, usually with Allen wrenches 3, 4 or 5 mm. You might get lucky and the old housing can be used but be aware that old housing can be compromised with kinks or corrosion. So, as earlier stated the shifter operates nicely shifting through 7 gears smoothly. My only reservation is that my experience with this type of push pull shifter as compared to twist grip is that over a period of years the lubricant inside dries and causes failure or at the very least balky shifting. So in the short term this shifter works but with limitations.
Review: Value, Performance, Excellent Replacement for Grip Shifter! - The grip shifter on our 2023 Sunseeker Tad SX was accurate, but proved to be very hard to twist once you headed towards the lower gears...not helpful! Even though it seems a grip shift might be more 'intuitive', the degree of difficulty encountered during the 'Pulling phase" of the derailleur was too difficult to be a long-lasting solution. Enter this very inexpensive and easy to use Shimano Altus trigger shifter! I've been using Shimano products for many years, and I knew there would be a considerable difference in feel, leverage, and ease of use, but it wasn't until I was done with the installation that I saw how remarkably different and vastly improved this new shifter was. Removal of the grip shifter was essentially 1) Shift all the way to the smallest sprocket (#7 for this shifter), then remove the lower grip shifter tube, 2) loosen the derailleur connection for the shifter cable and remove the cable end cap, 3) take the grip shifter off (one single allen wrench screw) while pulling the cable out of the cable housing. Installation of the Altus shifter: 1) Loosen and remove the brake lever (it will go on the opposite side of the Altus vs the grip shifter), 2) Install the Altus, lubricate the cable housing with silicone spray, and carefully push the new shifting cable through the housing, then 3) Attach the new cable at the derailleur and tighten bolt, and finally 4) Install your brake lever on the inside of the Altus...done! Check your shifting, some fine adjustment may be needed. Also, you'll need new hand grips, as the old grip shifter won't be long enough anymore. Highly recommended!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ PERFECT!!! And easy to install.
*by S***H on July 26, 2022*

I'm 77, former occasional marathoner, couldn't run because of bad hips, started walking had to stop because of bad hips, ortho doc said ride your bicycle. My old hybrid bike had a Shimano grip shifter and wouldn't you know it, I developed arthritis in the base joint of my right thumb and could not shift because of the pain. I read up on this shifter, watched a couple of YouTube videos, and bought this one. I am not a bike mechanic though I do play one in my garage. Took me all of 25 minutes to remove the old grip shifter, install this one, and go for a test ride. This shifter does not come with instructions, so, here's what I did. You will need: -- a 10mm socket for your ratchet handle; -- a set of mm size Allen wrenches, I didn't notice what size I used, just pull out a set; -- flat-blade screwdriver; -- wire cutter; -- big pliers or crimper of some kind; -- spray bottle with a little rubbing alcohol in it; -- a bike repair stand -- if you do any biking at all, you need to invest one of these - it's the stand you see in the bike shop where they lift the bike off the ground and clamp it onto the stand. When this shifter arrives from Amazon, in the box is a tiny silver thing wrapped in plastic. DO NOT LOSE THIS THING. DON'T LOSE IT. GOT THAT -- DON'T LOSE IT!! 1. Put your bike on your repair stand. Trace the cable from the right-hand shifter to the derailleur. The cable is in a black housing that you MUST re-use. 2. Standing on the RIGHT side of the bike, with your LEFT hand on the pedal and your RIGHT hand on the shifter to be removed, pedal the bike forward, shift into 7th gear and leave it there. 3. With your smartphone, take pictures of the entire route of the shifter cable from the shifter to the derailleur. Also take a pic of where the cable is connected to the derailleur shifter at the rear chain sprocket. Pay special attention to where the housing goes into/through clamps welded onto the bike frame. 4. Stick a flat-blade screwdriver under the hand grip where it joins the shifter, pry the hand grip up, hold it up, spray a liberal amount of alcohol under the grip; do the same to the underside of the grip. 5. Find the mm Allen wrench the fits the screw clamping the sifter and the handbrake lever to the handlebar. Loosen them slightly. 6. Now that the alcohol has loosened the handgrip, pull it off - you may have to work around with the screwdriver blade, but it will slide right off. 7. Go the rear derailleur and find the screw that clamps the cable to the derailleur. Will take a 10mm socket, loosen it. Cut the little tip off the cable; pull the cable up through the clamp so it's free. 8. Go to the front of the bike, grab the old shifter, loosen it, pull it off the handlebar, then pull and pull and the cable will slide out of the housings and eventually pull free. 9. Now -- clamp the new shifter in place, tighten onto the handlebar with the Allen wrench. 10. Thread the cable through the housing pieces. Be certain to hang/insert the housing pieces into their brackets -- see, I told you to take some pics before you took it apart -- refer to the pics. 11. When you get the cable pulled all the way through, check to ensure the lever is tightened to the handlebars, then, go to the back of the bike and PULL the cable through the clamp on the derailleur shifter -- make certain the housings are in place. Pull the cable TIGHT. 12. This will take more hands than you have, but you can do it -- hold the cable TIGHT through the clamp, using the 10mm socket tighten the cable to the derailleur shifter. 13. Stand on the right side, left hand on the pedal, right hand on the shifter, pedal the bike and try to shift. May not work. If it doesn't work, put the shifter back in 7, loosen the 10mm nut, pull the cable through the clamp, move the derailleur shifter up slighty, and tighten again, lifting up on the derailleur shifter as you tighten the cable. Took me three times and on the third time, it shifted smoothly. 14. Remember that little sliver thing I told you DO NOT LOSE? There will be several inches of cable hanging out under the clamp in the derailleur shifter -- cut that to about 2 inches long, slide that little thing onto the cut end of the cable and crimp it with pliers or a crimper. This thing keeps the cable from raveling. 15. Install the hand grip back onto the handle bar -- use a hammer to tap it on. Grip the handgrip, see if you can operate the shifter up/down, and THE BRAKES. Loosen, re-position, tighten the brake lever and shifter to positions on the handlebar that are comfortable and safe. And now it's Miller time. Nothing to it. I just ordered a 3-position shifter to replace the old handgrip shifter on the left side.
