And then you find out there is hum that needs to be eliminated. The female side allows the existing cable to be used by unplugging the RCA cable from the amplifier and plugging into this noise filter and then the noise filter male connectors plug into the amplifier. Electronically it should work with either side as the input because it is a passive filter. But I've never needed to use male connector as the input because I always put the noise filer as close to the amplifier as possible.
