## Description

This 7 CD + DVD box set (the first Toyah box set ever) features six albums (minx, desire, Prostitute, ophelia's shadow, take the leap, Velvet lined shell) and 44 bonus tracks, including rarities, b-sides, collaborations, and several unreleased tracks, plus a DVD of promo videos and a brand new exclusive interview filmed in December 2019. In 1985, after five studio albums and two live albums with her band, Toyah decided to go solo, and signed to Sony's portrait label. The album "minx" Contained two hit singles in "don't fall in Love (I said)" and "soul passing through soul", as well as covers of Alice Cooper's "school's out" And rare Bird's "sympathy". 1987'S "desire", on EG Records, featured appearances from Robert Fripp and Ron Wood and toyah's cover of "Echo Beach", and now contains the previously unreleased outtake "mesmerised". "Prostitute" (1988) was an arresting and fascinating departure from the pop formula, a trend continued by 1991's "ophelia's shadow". In 1994, "take the leap" Featured new songs and intriguing revisits of several of her earlier pop hits. 2003'S "Velvet lined shell" Took Toyah back along a more commercial path. Amongst the bonus tracks are toyah's collaborations with Tony banks, Trey Gunn, German band Kiss of reality, family of noise and this fragile moment. The lavishly-illustrated 48 page booklet features annotation about each album written by Toyah herself. Also featured is an essay on the period covered by the box by toyah's official archivist and compiler of this box set, Craig Astley. As Craig says: "eclectic is an often-overused word but is an accurate description of this intriguing and revelatory body of work. From unashamed pop and avant-garde to progressive rock and back to punk, the Common factors throughout are toyah's voice and lyrics but moreover, a sense of forging and following her own creative solo path". Toyah (together with fellow 80s Star hazel O'Connor) will be touring the UK throughout April 2020 under the banner "electric ladies of the 80s".

Review: Toyah's Evolution - I have been a fan of Toyah for many years and have seen her live many times as well and she is still amazing live. This is the first collector's box set from Toyah. It contains all her albums when she was a solo artist as apposed to Toyah the Band. It's a great insight into her own evolution as an artist and song writer. It contains two of her most experimental albums "Prostitute" and "Ophelia's Shadow" but each of these albums are also a kind of a musical timeline and each album contains rare and bonus tracks. "Desire" which has long been a favourite album of mine now has the tracks that were removed on the insistence of the record company in favour of three cover versions, but the tracks are restored here so you can get an idea of how the album would have sounded if Toyah had been permitted to release it as it was first recorded. The set also has a CD known as Rare and remastered and revisited, and contains new versions of classic Toyah songs including a stunning new version of "Angel And Me" and also of my all time favourite track "Good Morning Universe" These revisits showcase how great Toyah's vocals still are and reflect the richness age has given her voice.the album Minx deserves a re listen as it's actually a reall good album and also the track "America For Beginners" appears again in this box set as a recently released new version of this song for a recent film soundtrack. The highlight if this box set is the DVD,that has videos for songs like "Echo Beach" and "Don't Fall In Love" but also an interview where Toyah talks about the making of each of the albums featured in this box set, placing each one in context and given an insight into their creation and also about her life in music and how the industry has treated her. It gives each album a new weight somehow. There is also a second interview in which Toyah interviews her husband Robert Fripp and this gives an insight how he worked with her and also helped her evolve as an artist. This is to be the first of future box sets, and its beautifully put together and it also contains a brilliantly written 48 page booklet by Toyah herself and her publicist Craig Astley which contains great photos of Toyah too and adds more context to each of the albums. This box set will appeal to long term fans like myself but I think will also gain Toyah new fans. The price is really good considering the high quality of this set.A must have and it ends with one of Toyah's newest songs for the soundtrack of the film "Invasion Planet Earth",unusual in that she didn't write the song, but listening to it it's the perfect song for her and shows how good her vocals still are. This was worth the wait and I can't wait for other future box sets if this one is anything to go by.A gift from Toyah to us her fans for sure!
Review: Ghosts In The Universe... - In my 42 years on this planet, I've always been aware of Toyah. Everyone knows Toyah. She is a national treasure! However, until 2020 I had only ever purchased one Toyah album: the sensational 2 disc 2019 epic In The Court of The Crimson Queen. I had pre-ordered the Solo box set on the strength of Crimson Queen but was constantly thinking "will this collection of Toyah albums be as good as Crimson or should I just cancel my order?" - I didn't cancel and am over the moon with the Solo box. Prostitute is surely one of the best albums ever recorded, isn't it? It's just so unique and can not be slotted into any genre. The lyrics, the music, the sounds, the vocals: all are absolutely outstanding. If this box set is anything to go by, then Toyah the solo artist has never released a duff album. Every album is different. Every theme unique. Her songwriting really is something special. There are some glorious hidden gems in this set: Soldier of Fortune, Terrorist of Love from Minx is a stomping 80s anthem that should have been a single. Modern dancefloor anthem Fallen (with Yomanda) deserves a wider audience. The title track from Ophelia's Shadow is all kinds of amazing. Step Into The New World (from Invasion Planet Earth) is a stunning piece of music as is Every Scar Has A Silver Lining from Velvet Lined Shell. Every disc has a bunch of beautifully crafted and perfectly executed songs. If you are wondering whether this set is worth buying, the answer is: YES. It 100% is! The sound on this set is gorgeous. None of that "too loud and distorted" remaster rubbish that is far too common these days. Everything is beautifully remastered with voice, instruments and everything else sounding stunning with every part of every song given room to breathe. Toyah is brutally honest in the liner notes which is a nice refreshing change and she is obviously (and rightly so) proud of her body of work although she is quick to point out what she feels is good and what is bad and what went wrong and why. I look forward to more new Toyah music releases in the future as she is a fantastic songwriter and underrated vocalist and her stories deserve to be told and shared with every single person in the universe. Out of the many box sets I have purchased over the years, Solo is one of the very best. Well done to everyone involved.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Beautifully packaged with new content
*by B***S on 2 May 2020*

This is an almost complete curation of Toyah's diverse solo work from 85-2019. It contains some beautiful artwork with new liner notes. Highlights include the deluxe edition of Desire (B sides on CD for the first time) unreleased demos from the 90s and an honest, detailed interview which explains each album in its context. Excellent value for money and a celebration of Toyah's range.
