I don't feel well unless I'm near it." –Little Edie Beale One of the strangest and subtlest films ever made, the Maysles Brothers' 1975 documentary Grey Gardens today boasts as devoted a following as Harold and Maude . Shot at Grey Gardens, the dilapidated East Hamptons mansion of "Big Edie" and "Little Edie" Beale, aunt and cousin to Jackie Onassis, this classic of cinema vérité tracks the Beales' eccentric and sequestered lives--which consist mostly of doing nothing, but with a mesmerizing zest and volubility. This volume offers a myriad of illustrations, photographs, film stills, production notes and other archival materials alongside transcripts of the Beales' own stories and conversations edited from unreleased Grey Gardens sound recordings. Structured to mirror the Maysles' approach to the world of the Beales, it resembles the enchanting clutter of the mansion, a self-contained world littered with mementos and ephemera. It also reproduces unpublished photographs by both Albert and David Maysles. With an introduction by Albert Maysles, drawings and illustrations by Albert's daughter, Rebekah Maysles and an appendix with the full transcript of Grey Gardens , as well as an audio CD of sound recordings capturing the Beales at their best, this book is the essential companion to the film and a beautiful testimony to its legacy. The 60-minute CD that comes with the book contains conversations with the Beales and their friends, songs and poetry recited by the two Edies and audio of the Beales during and after watching the film for the first time. Review: Awesome book!!! - I love this book. It's a piece of art. I bought it a while ago but I don't think I left a review. It's a beautiful book with illustrations and water coloring photos. I'm glad I found it. Review: A must have "Book for all Grey Gardens Fans!" - I received this book today and went through it and couldn't beleive all the love, sweat and hard work that went into putting the book together. I am so happy to own a copy of this book its well put together and when you open the book you are opening the front door to grey gardens and feeling and understanding all the emotions that go along with it.I felt I was there when this documentary was being made. The Beales are very colorful personalites. You can't help but like and feel for these two women, little Edie dreamed of being a star and Big Edie wanted to be the center of attention. When the documentary of their life in grey gardens was released they did get the attention and became stars. Noone knew the impact this documentary would have on people when it was released people were fansinated with this mother and daughter relationship. And until this day even though they are long gone fans like myself keep their spirit alive."Cheers!" to The Beales of Grey Gardens, and thanks to everyone involed in the making of their story and this outstanding book. This book is a must have to add to your grey gardens collection. ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | Best Sellers Rank | #2,302,763 in Books ( See Top 100 in Books ) #501 in Cinematography (Books) #1,986 in Video Direction & Production (Books) #2,233 in Movie Direction & Production | | Customer Reviews | 4.6 out of 5 stars 149 Reviews | ## Images ![Grey Gardens - Image 1](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71fv4xn-PYL.jpg) ## Customer Reviews ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Awesome book!!! *by A***R on November 1, 2025* I love this book.
