Review: Does the job, makes good coffee - Every morning at work, I made a fresh large pot of coffee in the traditional coffeemaker. When I came back to get a cup ten minutes later, the dudes in my department had taken the entire thing. The WHOLE thing. Every day. So I decided to get something that wouldn't run out. I usually fill it about half full. Do NOT use any sort of filter! You don't need it and it will not work at all with a filter. As the directions say, if the coffee seems to sift out of the basket, just wet the basket before adding the ground coffee. One thing I really like about this appliance is that it keeps coffee a bit hotter than glass carafes.

I've made a lot of tea in my regular coffee pot too, so I started looking at these large coffee brewers as a possible alternative. I figured for the price, it would be worth a try. So far, I absolutely love this thing! So easy to use, so easy to clean! If tea would stay fresh for 2 weeks at a time, I'd make 5 gallons instead. I bought a 2.5 gallon plastic water jug (rectangle gas can shape) with a spigot from Walmart for a few bucks, fill it up once the fresh brewed tea cools down, and store it in on the top shelf of my fridge. It's a miracle. So the point of this long review is really to brag about this thing as a cost-effective tea maker, as it's already proven to be an incredible coffee maker. I've also got a half-dozen other uses in mind for it! Zero complaints. SPECIAL NOTE: If you plan on using this machine to make tea (or coffee for that matter), you MUST keep in mind that the "cup" marks on the side of the urn indicate the philosophical international "standard" (it's complicated) fluid ounces for a cup of coffee (roughly 5.5oz), NOT the U.S. standard of 8 fluid oz. in a cup. So that's roughly 100 5.5oz cups of coffee. When you brew tea with tea bags, their measurements are 8oz. per cup as a serving. 320oz in 2.5 gallons is 40 servings at 8oz./cup. The family size tea bags I use brew 4 8oz. cups per bag, so I need 10 bags for 320oz. Just saving you the trouble...

**Q: The outside gets crazy hot-- any idea how to keep the outside from burning people who touch it?**
A: It's just thin sheet metal with no insulation, so yeah, it gets hot just like using a pan on the stove. The plastic piece that you maneuver up and down to fill cups doesn't get hot and that's all you should be touching. If it IS getting hot there, something is wrong with the urn and you should return it. I don't know, folks here know it's hot like a pan and don't touch the sides.

**Q: What kind of filters do you use?**
A: Hi there Sally,Actually, I just use the same basket-filters that I use for my 12 cup coffeemaker (laid flat, they're slightly larger than the diameter of the bottom of the basket) I just fold one into quarters (in half, then in half again...) then use a knife to cut about a 1 inch "X", along the center of those folds, for the stem. I'll also run just a little water in the basket first, on top of a new filter - to get it to lay flat and so that it stays-put for filling with a pretty coarse grind. It can be used without a filter too, IF the grind is very coarse and consistent - but I like to use the filters because there is always some sediment which can both tend to clog the holes in the basket and wind up in the brew... all that may sound like a pain, but I gave up trying to find filters that were really "made for it", and it only takes a minute to "customize" the use of what I already had a pretty huge stock of. BTW - contrary to instructions, I push the brew time quite a bit by starting out filling it with 75-80% hot tap water, for a full pot, then using 10-12 large scoops of coarse French Roast - that's MUCH quicker than using all cold water, and it tastes really good, as it doesn't give the result a chance to get bitter due to brewing for what seems like forever. Just clean it out quickly, every time it's used, don't store it with the lid on (if the insides are at all wet), and you'll find that it'll last a long time and it's capable of making pretty darn good coffee! Good beans = good coffee, even in a 30-cup percolator. Duh, that's definitely TMI - but I hope some of it helps!

**Q: Does it have a permanent filter?**
A: I know the maker has a permanent filter, but for me, clean up is much easier with a paper filter in it.  I work at a High School, and we use the coffee maker in different locations.  Sometimes, it just easier to have a coffee filter.  We use a smaller one and put a hole int the middle of it too.

**Q: Can I use it to make tea?**
A: Unhappily, my coffee urn arrived without a power cord, soanything at all! I cannot answer a question about making
