Review: Teachable moment - a great way to share our nation's history - ALL of it - Great children's story about an important time in our nation's history and overcoming adversity. While the topic is heavy (segregation), the main character is a very young girl. If she could live through the horrors of being called names only due to the color of her skin and belittled as a first grader and still show kindness to those who tried to oppress her, I felt my 7 year old niece should be able to handle reading it. It is presented very well and in terms children can understand without being scared. It is also a great chance to have a teaching opportunity. We must teach our young people history lest it repeat itself! There is also a very well made and kid friendly movie about the topic that is available on desertcart.

Great children's story about an important time in our nation's history and overcoming adversity. While the topic is heavy (segregation), the main character is a very young girl.
