It's a separate device that attaches to the top of the camera and plugs in the back of the camera. It also requires a separate battery AND On - +0db +xdb -Off and forgetting that will leave you with a silent movie. I mistakenly attached everything and plugged the mic in and started recording. The mic wasn't plugged ALL THE WAY in and came loose and lost audio on that recording. Mic takes a separate AAA battery with the On/Off/+db is on the mic itself. It takes some getting used to but now it's second nature when getting ready to record.I have yet to test it in Low Light so can't attest to that feature.I use this and an older Sony Handycam HDR-CX405Comparing the 2 I get better Video Quality off this camera but BETTER audio with the Sony. It was easy to set up and get going. It’s a very minimal design which make navigating though menus fairly straight forward. All the accessories worked great. Once I realized the microphone has a battery it worked great. Getting the files from the camera to the computer has never been easier for me. First try, no fuss, files downloaded right to my computer.It’s really light weigh which makes it a great choice for vlogging. Plus the flip screen rotates all the way around and feels fairly durable. The handheld stabilization is a great touch and just boosts the value of this camera even more.The night vision capabilities is super fun. I didn’t even realize it had that, but will be using it from now on.Overall fantastic value. It's not substantially solid but well done. Overall I would recommend it as a buy, however, I had a couple of issuesI bought it for use in recording content for instructional videos and to use as a web cam. The web cam functionality is a little oversold. It does state in the documentation that the minimum focal length is about 3-4 feet. I find that a little impractical as the maximum distance I can get the camera back on my desktop is about 2 1/2 feet, but its typically closer more like 2 feet. So I look slightly blurry while my background is in focus. In addition the "zoom" is pretty tight even at 3 feet so it does not capture the 4x5 white board that sits about 1 foot behind me. These are not issues I have on my laptop camera or my Logitech webcam. It still seems to take really good video and stills of images over 5 feet away.Also I run the output through a port replicator so I can switch between two different laptops. In this configuration I cannot get either laptop to recognize the microphone. This might be a problem with my port replicator but if I hook up the same mic directly to the port replicator both laptops recognize the input, so I suspect it the camera.
