The overlays aren't as robust as more expensive dinnerware, so hand washing is a must, even though the product boasts to be dishwasher safe. I've had the set for quite a while now and have put every piece in the dishwasher. I haven't had a problem. I would not have bought a set that was not dishwasher safe. **Q: What metal is the gold band made of? If it is lead, is it at safe levels? Has the gold faded after use?** A: By all apperances, it is gold. It still looks like the day I bought it and polishes well with Bar Tenders Helper. If you polish, be sure to avoid the gold finish. As near as I could learn about the tableware, it contains no lead. **Q: Is it safe to use in the microwave?** A: I have had them now for almost 2 years.
