Review: Awesome! - I've been camping and hiking all my life and I have to say that this little solid fuel cooking system is awesome! I've used Esbit solid fuel tabs for awhile now and they're wonderful - I keep tabs in my 10 essentials kit. I got this little baby just for fun and to see what I could do with it and thus far I'm more than impressed. Super compact, well made, super light, and super easy to use. I got this model because of the built-in windscreen design (needed to maximize solid fuel efficiency) and the perfect 20oz size cup, which is just right for solo camping/hiking activities. Use it with a larger pot if needed like the GSI Soloist. As it is the kit allows me to store 12 14gram tabs (that's 120+ minutes of fuel) and a lighter all wrapped in a cute little mesh bag. Bottom line, while I still use liquid fuel systems, this kit can be used as your exclusive stove for many types of (multi-day) outings. That said, this kit and certainly the Esbit brand is probably one of the best solid fuel combos around for the $$. So if you're thinking about one just get it, we've all wasted more $$ on lesser things! ~ Last thought. Cold water takes more heat energy to warm, so if you're camping with this thing, take a 16oz container of water to bed with you and you'll be heat water from 70* instead of 40* in the AM and thus much more efficient- for any trail cook system.
Review: Great compact stove/cookset....but. - Yes there it is a "but" in the title line. And it's there for a good reason this is a great set with limitations from it's design. It's fuel source is Esbit solid fuel (Hexamine) tablets. A tablet is placed in the tray and lit with a match or lighter the tablet will burn with a steady heat for about 10-14 minutes usually enough time to boil 16oz of water for your freeze dried meals, for a hot drink or to warm the entrée of your MRE. The tablet burns with an all-or-nothing attitude and isn't really suitable for foods that require a simmer. Also bear in mind the condition under which it is used will effect the efficiency of the stove. High winds or subzero temperature can reduce the heat output. Tablets can be blown out and reused to conserve your fuel supply. OK lets have a look at the set itself. Three parts go to make up the set 1, the 16oz pot with built in folding staycool handles. 2, the stove itself. And 3 a lid to cover the pot. The stove unit fits inside the pot and the lid rests on top. A mesh draw string bag is provided for storage. The whole thing is, in my opinion, up to the usual high quality standards I'm used to from Esbit. After long hard research on the net for compact stove for my BoB and/or SiP kit I settled on this one. The tablets have a very long shelf life if kept away from moisture (I've used 10 year old tablets without a problem) I decided against alcohol stoves because of the hassle of fuel storage but that was a personal choice. All in all I'm very happy with the stove and highly recommend it. A few hints and tips. 1, Line the stove bottom with foil to reflect heat up and make clean up easier. 2, The bottom of the pot can be foil covered (dull side to the flame, shiny side to the pot) prevents the pot bottom from getting covered in fuel residue. 3, Save the plastic bags to wrap the stove section in before placing inside the pot for storage this is for sanitary reasons. REMOVE PLASTIC BAGS PRIOR TO USING STOVE SECTION. 4, You can get 9 14g fuel tablets plus 3 books of matches and a cut down plastic spoon inside the pot/stove and still close the lid for an all in one grab-and-go cook stove. 5, If what you're cooking requires stirring use a plastic spoon to avoid scratching the inside of the pot. If you're looking for a camping cookset or something for your emergency kit this is a great choice. "I can sleep when the wind blows"

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How long does it take to boil water in this?**
A: It would not boil water for me. Really lame. 13 minutes (until the tab was almost gone) the water only gets up to about 185 degrees. :(

**Q: Can you use inside a tent or would it burn a hole in the floor?**
A: Using any stove in a tent poses a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning regardless of whether or not it would burn a hole in the floor!!! But yes, the bottom of the stove gets very hot and it probably would burn a hole in the floor, adding fumes from burning nylon to the carbon monoxide.

**Q: Can you use the stove to make small stick fires instead of using fuel cubes?**
A: Yes you can..I've had this stove for two years and used it number of times. Though it was a learning curve and fuel attentive. 1st. You need a good coal base and a blow bellow. 2nd find dryden sticks about finger diameter and foot long. 3rd after coal base built up stick the sticks into opening all the way to the back. Stack the sticks no more than three high the sticks must overlap crisscrossing them allowing the fire to blaze each stick. 4th as sticks burn down keep pushing them inwards arranging them to not smother your flame. A side note: I have found finding a flat stone as high as the opening to rest on LEVEL makes adjustments of sticks less tedious.

**Q: will the stove portion fit inside the pot for convenient storage in my rucksack?**
A: Yes, the pot is designed to store inside the pot. Works great, very small and light when packed. Comes with a small mesh bag to old it all together as well.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great Little Stove—Just Needs Fuel Flexibility
*by L***N on July 25, 2025*

I’ve been using the Esbit CS585HA for my backpacking trips, and I really like this little setup. It’s ultra-light and compact—everything nests neatly into the included mesh bag, and it weighs just under 7 oz. The hard-anodized aluminum pot is durable, has volume indicators, and the folding handles are sturdy. The stove works well with Esbit’s solid fuel cubes, which burn cleanly and are easy to pack. The wind deflector/pot stand is a nice touch, helping to keep the flame focused and efficient. My only wish is that it could accept a wider range of fuels. If it were compatible with alcohol or wood, it would be the ultimate lightweight cook kit.
