I needed this M.2 SSD holder to clone my laptop's 128GB drive to a larger SSD drive. The 1st USB board I purchased was unreliable and flaky and I gave up after 4 hrs (search for other reviews by me if you are curious which "recommended by desertcart" board you should AVOID). This one worked perfectly 1st time with zero issues. The retention hardware shipped with this board was easier to use. (Harder to find, it was buried in the bottom of the anti-static bag and almost missed it). You will need a small tip Phillips head screwdriver. I have several sets, and the replacement SSD and the hard case I purchased for future use for the old SSD both came with one. Recommended. 6/11/20 follow-up: I used it to make a backup image of another drive and move it to a separate offline storage. Worked smooth and fast. Review: Runs my 1 TB M2 just fine - and while it has one single memory chip in an area where they coulda put 3 more , it fits the full length. I like that you can split it to fit. One thing I'm not too font of is the M2 drive ends up on the bottom instead of the top , so it'd only work best if you have a sideways usb port. Otherwise it's bottom heavy and puts straing on a vertical usb port. Was interesting that my M2 has 3 RED led's on it that nobody will ever see when it's inside the laptop. But hey it supports a 1 TB SSD. Mines an off brand called Neo Forza. Not much is known of them but they do have a website. As my HP is in for service. I removed all the drives as it had nothing to do with actual hard ware, just the laptop housing had issues. So for privacy issues I removed the drives. The mechanical had to be removed because it has several Pending sectors , and for now had to be reformatted in full to get rid of them. I was able to get Windows 10 to see the adapter, but because I had the wrong type of adapter it couldn't see the SSD that was mounted in it. This adapter does not work with nvme drives. **Q: Up-to-date win 10 drivers, but device not ready, no wizard option. old win xp dos: device not ready. what to do? :-(** A: Never mind it's supposed to be backward compatible. Mine works fine on win 10 using usb 3.0 **Q: I put it (with an ssd from my laptop) in a chromebook. not recognized, yet then chrome os is "damaged." why would this do anything to an os?** A: Not sure what you are really asking for. Should not damage the OS at all. If the drive is good then you should be able to see it on a windows laptop. If you still have issues get a copy of hiren boot cd, medicat or something simmilar and boot up from usb. Overall I'm really please especially with the price ### ⭐ Dead on arrival *by M***D on May 20, 2022* I was seeking an M.2 USB 3.0 adapter to boot a TrueNAS operating system from, so I bought this and the most affordable 128GB B+M M.2 drive I could off Amazon. With these bought, I assembled the lot and plugged them into the internal USB 3.0 connector of my Supermicro motherboard. I then spent a whole evening trying to figure out if the M.2 was dead or not, as nothing would allow it to boot - including the 2.0 connectors on the motherboard itself. I then bit the bullet for a $20 adapter with better reviews - and the SSD worked and booted without issue. Further testing with a second SSD proved that this adapter wasn't working at all. Plus, the breakaway PCB had already partially broken away by the time it arrived. Don't fall for the cheap price. Get one of the $20 variety and forget this one even exists.
