The zipper of the main compartment opens all the way to allow you to use this as a shooting mat. It is not the ultimate shooting mat and I would not use it as such for a match shoot but it works good to sit on and best of all it keeps your gear out of the mud. The secondary compartment is enclosed to keep your mags out of the weather and when being used as a mat they do not get in the mud. Also they are not visible to nervous bystanders. The padding is plentiful and the fabric is sturdy. It has repositionable velcro straps to hold your rifle in place. The secondary compartment is solid velcro on one side to attach pouches. It comes with a triple/ double stack M-4 mag pouch that will hold 6 mil-spec mags. Looks to have room for 2 more of such mag pouches for a total of 18 or so M-4 30rd mags..540 rounds of 5.56 or 300 AAC. Blackhawk makes a variety of velcro pouches to fit whatever...handgun, pistol mags and so on.
