## Description

The Mora Companion Heavy Duty is a powerful tool for bushcrafters, hunters and outdoor enthusiasts. Suitable for batoning, the Companion Heavy Duty features a thick, 1/8-inch (3.2mm) carbon steel blade with a slightly blunter 27 Degree edge angle for high load capacity and maximum sharpness resistance. The Companion HD has an extra large ergonomic handle with a soft high-friction grip. The classic scandi grind combined with high quality carbon steel makes the knife easy to resharpen. Mora knives made from high carbon steel achieve high hardness, sharpen easily and are exceptionally tough. High carbon steels are preferred in applications that demand durability and frequent regrinding. The material is harder than stainless steel, allowing it to hold a sharper and more durably acute edge. Mora Knives are made from high-quality carbon steel. The carbon knife steels are characterized by ultra-fine carbides that result in superb forging and hardening properties. The absence of large carbide deposits promotes excellent edge sharpness for optimum cutting performance. Morakniv has been manufacturing the highest-quality knives in Mora, Sweden since 1891. Professionals worldwide trust the quality materials and fine craftsmanship of Mora Knives. Mora knives feature ergonomically-designed handles and employ premium-quality knife steel that is optimally adapted to the task for which the knife is intended.

Review: GREAT all-purpose knife - This is simply a great knife. Noticeably thicker than the Mora Craftline Q, which is also a great knife (especially for children, or those who aren't used to being, cooking, cutting in the great outdoors). Says it's suitable for batoning. I haven’t used it for that, but have used it for fuzz sticks, making notches, stripping wood, etc. The handle feels great in my hand. I got the hi viz orange. I'm a backpacker - I want to be seen, and not lose anything 3 days in to a 5 day hike. For me personally, I put this in the category of "all around camp knife." It's the one everyone can use to do pretty much anything around camp. For general weekend backpacking or car camping, I pair this with the also excellent Light My Fire Scout, Smiths PP1 two stage sharpener and a swiss army knife (for cutting meats, veges, etc.). To contrast philosophy of use, for my distance hikes in Montana and Alaska, I do take the Bear Gryles Survival knife. In my opinion, the knife, sharpener, and fire rod aren’t as optimized as the previous set of kit, but it’s meant for a different purpose. Nice tidy, survival oriented, something just got really weird and I’m 2 days from anyone and it’s time to go, kind of kit. So with that contrast, the Mora is a smaller blade. It’s definitely a higher quality steel than the Bear Gryles. Honestly the Mora just feels better. It just feels like a knife optimized as the all-around, all-purpose camping, fishing, hunting, and backpacking knife that you can beat the bojangles out of. Also, I like to introduce people to backpacking and camping. This is a knife people can feel comfortable using and experimenting with to build skills with. And if it gets damaged, I don’t care. This is a EXCEEDINGLY HIGH value knife at the price it’s being offered for. As an example, my girlfriend said “the Bear feels like a Rambo-knife… no thank you… Mora please…” That is a direct quote. The knife is robust, sharp, high quality, and feels good in the hand. AND… it’s an exceedingly high value purchase. Highly recommended.
Review: A great knife at a reasonable price - This Mora is a very well made knife at a very reasonable price. It arrives razor-sharp out the box and fits comfortably in the hand. This knife is the one I would definitely take with me when I go camping.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: How is this knife for skinning game? Does it clean up fairly easily? I feel like blood could get stuck in the grooves in the handle...**
A: I've used this knife on several animals now and it is my go to. We process our own cattle. On cows and young bulls , it can hold an edge throughout, for skinning, parting out and deboning. On an older bull I touch up the blade with either a fine diamond steel or the Fiskars axe sharpener as I go. Pigs are no problem at all. The point is great for making finger holes to pull the skin, IF you aren't keeping the hide. Easily spilts the hide from ankles down the leg. I also gut with it, running it between my two fingers, pulling up, so not to puncture the intestines. It does rust if you don't oil it after every use. I use a green brillo pad and soap to clean it off when I forget. Knife is strong, even if not a full tang. I baton hard wood, like mesquite, for kindling. I also ground the spine so I can strike sparks, works great. The sheath is exceptional IMHO. I have a Morakniv Kansbol, ALSO a very strong knife. I don't carry that one as much because I need two hands to pull it out of the sheath. Where as this Companion has a thumb break. Works great one handed. Rubber handle is also very grippy while bloody and wet. At this price, There is no reason not to own several of these knives. It rivals my $150-$200 knives. No brainer.

**Q: Is this knife roughly the same or maybe even better than the Bushcraft knife?**
A: Both the Bushcraft Black and the Companion Heavy Duty have a 3.2mm thick carbon steel blade. The blade of the Black is slightly longer (4.3") than the HD (4.1") and it is also wider. The Black also has a DLC (Diamond Like Coating) to aid in the prevention of rust. The other apparent aesthetic differences are the handle grip and the sheath which will largely be a matter of personal preference.Performance-wise I would say they are very similar. They both seem to be good to great at most bushcrafting tasks though I would probably give a slight edge to the black for batoning with the slightly longer and wider blade. With either knife maybe limit the log diameter to 3-1/2" to 3-3/4" max. Both should hold an edge very well and sharpen fairly easily with the Scandi grind on both knives. Perhaps the most significant edge for the Black over the HD besides the coating (DLC) is the fact that it comes with the spine ground to a sharp 90 degrees allowing for sparking with a ferro rod. The HD can also made to spark as well with a minor modification of filing or grinding down the spine slightly. The biggest difference is the price. The Black will run you $50 - $55 on Amazon right now while the HD has been in the $17 - $19 range. You will have to decide whether the Black is worth nearly 2-1/2 to 3 times more than the HD.

**Q: is it full tang?**
A: Is not a full tang

**Q: mora heavy duty better then the basic Mora knife. thanks**
A: I am not sure what you mean by the "better than basic Mora Knife. However, the Knife above is a very heavy duty knife. comes with a plastic sheith that locks the knife down well. The knife itself has a very thick spin....overall, I was very pleased with my purchase of it.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A great knife at a reasonable price
*by A***O on March 30, 2026*

This Mora is a very well made knife at a very reasonable price. It arrives razor-sharp out the box and fits comfortably in the hand. This knife is the one I would definitely take with me when I go camping.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I sharpen both regularly to hair popping sharpness and know what a good piece of steel feels like and how it responds ...
*by W***3 on August 7, 2015*

Just received my Mora Companion heavy duty....after reading many reviews I decided to take the plunge on this "cheap" knife and see what all the smoke was about. Let me preface my review by saying I restore old hand planes and am familiar with both carbon steel blades and the much harder and modern A 2 steel blades. I sharpen both regularly to hair popping sharpness and know what a good piece of steel feels like and how it responds to being sharpened. I am quite frankly, at a loss as to how Mora can sell this kind of quality for so little money. Out of the box it was shaving sharp - no exaggeration here. The heft and stability of the blade are quite impressive for a knife of any price much less for one that costs about 16 bucks. I took it down to my shop and ran it over an 8000 grit polishing stone and it did improve the smoothness of the edge a bit but not that much. It was already very sharp out of the box. I would give this more stars if I could - it's a ridiculous bargain given the price - I will be ordering more for my garden, the woods and work - why not? I have paid 2 to 3 times as much for knives that went belly up after a few months of use. I have not beat on it yet but I am sure that it will be just fine. As a piece of advice - I have read several reviews which stated that some people were disappointed the carbon steel knives rusted or pitted - listen, carbon steel is a wonderful metal - it is used in the finest Japanese hand plane blades / but it is not stainless - you must oil and clean the blade after use. It's the price you pay for enjoying this type of metal. There is nothing I do not like about this knife. The scabbard is utilitarian but totally functional. The blade is thick and SHARP. I know the carbon steel will hold an edge very well and be very easy to sharpen, especially with the scandi grind - it's fool proof. If you need a quality piece of steel for work or play at an insane price - buy one - or as I plan to do - buy several and ENJOY! Highly recommend as I am HIGHLY surprised by the quality of this knife at this or any other price. And guys - do yourself a favor and get off of the bigger is better thing - you don't need a foot long knife to get the job done. Relax <G>
