The household tank is 40 litres, and I wanted one that would cope easily with that size of tank whilst being easy and straightforward to clean. I also wanted something that was compact yet powerful, refreshing and re-circulating the water at a frequent rate. My old pump had been a ‘needs must’ replacement itself, and failed on many of those counts, being difficult to clean, bulky and quickly packing up. This VicTsing filter however meets all those self-imposed criteria whilst having the added bonus of not costing a fortune either.The pump runs off a standard UK 240V supply with a 3-pin plug included. The length of the cable at 1½ metres is not so long that you have loads of spare cable to trip over but not so short that you have to be adjacent to a plug either. It’s only using a paltry 4W of electricity meaning it’s very economical, a feature I like, and at just 15.4 x 12.4 x 5.6 cm it sits unobtrusively in the corner of the tank, firmly attached by three small rubber suckers which attach to the tank wall readily – my old one used to slide down the wall repeatedly, so it’s a real plus that this stays where put. Despite that low power consumption it moves a tremendous level of water – 300 litres per hour, meaning the water gets refreshed to the delight of the tropical fish. That power however means that the single filter does clog up a couple of times a week, although you simply take off the bottom panel and rinse the integrated sponge out. This is however a quick job and extracting rubbish from the water that the fish would otherwise be breathing.You can set the pump up in one of two ways: either with or without a supplied tube around 0.5cm diameter which attaches to the water outlet. Depending on your need without the tube the water will create a current, with an orange lever allowing adjustment for a flow to suit the type of fish you keep – anything from minimal to quite turbid. Using the tube instead it features five holes along its length and acts with a ‘watering can’ effect, giving the fish a ‘waterfall effect through the holes. I found that this clogs up as often as the sponge, so it gets a rinse through at the same time. I’ve tried varying the effect for the fish but they seem to prefer it with the shower effect, which produces a nice layer of bubbles they enjoy swimming through, although the construction of this tube is in three principle parts which clip together, meaning that you can angle the tube to suit your needs – its just as easy to position close to the water as at a bigger drop depending on preference.The set comes with a spare sponge, which is quite a dense material, capturing any solids in the tank and given that these will eventually wear out like any consumable item extending the life with a spare is thoughtful. As the sponges are simple cuboids if you are struggling to source replacements they should be easily replicated given similar material.The quality of the water has markedly improved using this filter, which isn’t that noisy in operation either, meaning it’s just a low background noise that shouldn’t annoy anyone but the most sensitive, and indeed I find the sound of gently running water quite relaxing so no problems there. It’s suitable for both tropical and cold water fish, though not for anything requiring salt water which would rot the motor quickly. I’ve noticed the fish appear much livelier since changing over to this pump once it had established itself. At £15.99 I think it offers good value for money too. I’m very pleased with this purchase, although it takes a small amount of maintenance to ensure it is working to full efficiency. The household tropical fish are definitely fans of it as well. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Can be a bit picky, but quiet if placed exactly right. *by M***B on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 23 October 2019* So I find this one can be quite loud if you don’t place it *exactly* right. If I press the suckers against the tank too hard, it makes a horrible click sound and a gargle. I recommend putting it in when everything else is in place in your tank, slight knock and the noise starts.Virtually silent from 6 feet away when placed exactly right! I added this a 2nd filter to standard filter i received with my marina tank and within an hour noticed a huge difference!!
