He gets very excited about the colors, and he loves how they write. I tested one out and it does have a very nice smooth output. These pencils are really durable and our 7yo likes that they come in a variety of colors. The only problem with them is that they keep disappearing (our son might have something to do with that :D ) which is why this is a repeat purchase. My kids are always sharpening their pencils because the tips always break off, and it takes from their homework time. But these pencils never seem to break the tips!
