They look just like the photo. The beads don't light, only the small bulbs on the string. The 8 flashing modes are a little useless in my opinion, they blink either very fast or very slow. I find the blinking annoying. I use them in the steady mode only, which makes the light very bright. The really nice part about these lights is they have an automatic timer, and they will go off and then come back on automatically 12 hours later! Super cool! I have used these almost nightly for over a month and the batteries are still working fine.
