The black surface layer appears to just be painted on rather thinly. The silver surface beneath is now visible where the scratches are. The scratch must have come from rubbing up against stainless steel door handles.This is in contrast to another black Tungsten carbide ring I've worn for years that has no scratches (as it should be, Tungsten carbide is significantly harder than most metals, especially common stainless steel). Someone else in the Q&A seems to have already pointed out that this ring can scratch.I'm skeptical that this is actually tungsten carbide as there shouldn't really be anything that can scratch it (besides a diamond).
