That being said, I ended up taking this out of my design. I actually had it installed and tiled in, but in addition to some other things I didn't like about my shower, i wasnt satisfied with this drain. It looked just fine, as I expected it to be from the pictures, but I wasn't comfortable with the design for my uses.As other have stated, the base is grey plastic. This did not bother me, the grate itself is good quality and covers it. Not sure why people are unhappy with plastic since it connects to your plastic drain flange which goes to your plastic house plumbing.Per the instructions I attached it to a standard drain flange. I had a 2 peice drain and removed the drain that came with it and attached this one.I'm not a plumber, but I do alot of my own renovation. I completely plumbed my 2000 Sq ft colonial home myself. There are a few different style shower drains that I know of, but the most common is a 2 peice system. For those who aren't familiar, basically the floor drain you see collects all of the water, but In a tile floor, some water is going to get under the tile. This water gets to the drain through weep holes in the lower part of these 2pc drain systems. The main thing I did not like was that there is alot of surface area around this drain, and I could not figure a way to tile around this thing without an enormous amount of water seeping under the drain body and going to the weep holes. In a perfect tile job (one that I'm not capable of anyway) you would have your tiles flush to the edges, maybe grouted or caulked there, but I couldn't figure how to prevent a large amount of water from getting under this thing. I understand in a normal drain on a mud base shower that water is going to penetrate grout and eventually flows out through your weep holes. But this design would allow a very large amount of water to the weep holes, and I couldn't imagine my mud pan not being fully saturated every shower. By design it's not a flood risk or anything, it just seemed too extreme for me to rely on these 4 tiny holes to handle this water for multiple showers a day.I ended up using a kerdi square drain for ease of installation which is actually a 1 pc system where all the water just goes to the drain hole, no need for weep holes to catch water that seeps through the grout. Schluter who makes Kerdi also has an infinity drain that works with their one pc system. That being said, this type of shower system is significantly more expensive than doing a mud pan. Maybe you would expect to spend like $500 more for a standard walk in shower, but it is a great system. I've also seen other designs that seemed to do a better job of making sure water gets to the main drain hole than this one.Like I said I'm not a pro plumber so maybe Im missing something, but it just didn't seem like a good design to me. I still gave it 4 stars since it does look good and probably work as intended. With a proper install should work and look just fine, I just wasn't comfortable with the design myself.If you have any questions feel free to ask, I'll do my best to answer. The only part that isn't plastic is the grate itself. The body is plastic. Also be aware that this item DOES NOT come with the flange necessary to install. It's also a very hard part to find.
