Review: Great game. 10/10 - Love this game. The DLC is highly recommended and worth the money.
Review: A game greater than the sum of its parts...maybe - First, let me state that I waited until the game was complete before buying so all 5 chapters were available when I started playing. I also got it at a discounted price from the PS store. I'd heard both good and bad things about this game but I purposely avoided learning anything about the story. I wasn't sure what to expect and I can say that I developed a love/hate relationship after playing it. It is definitely not a game for everyone so I will try to sum up the gameplay without any spoilers so you can determine if it is right for you. This is definitely a no hand-holding type of game. There are very few instructions so you have to figure it out on your own. The objectives are clear but how to get to them may be a bit of a challenge. There is no marker to point you in the right direction. There is no fast-travel system and while that adds to the survival part of the game, honestly it gets super tedious. Walking is slow and carrying too much gear makes it even slower and you always have to go to the opposite side of the map. The map is updated as you explore so wandering around in a new area can leave you in a bind fairly quickly. I can't tell you how many times I had to backtrack for what seemed like miles because I thought I could get from point A to point B but discovered a mountain or landslide blocked the path. It got annoying. Not just walking is slow....EVERYTHING in this game is slow and it seems to be that way for no real reason. For example, you can't just search a desk, no you have to open each drawer, then search the drawer, then move to the next drawer, then search, then move to the next drawer and so on and most of the time the desk is empty so it was just a huge waste of time. Or say you decide you want to cook some canned food. You first have to open the can and there is a graphic for that, then you have to place the can on the fire then literally wait like 10 minutes for it to heat and if you wander away because you are bored, then likely you will return to burned up food. You can melt snow for water but it literally takes like 10 minutes for a small amount. Sleeping takes what seems like forever. I get the sense of "realism" but it quickly moves into ridiculous. Supplies are limited, especially at higher difficulty settings. You know you can't carry it all but its difficult to determine what to take. If you carry too much, you move too slow and every sloped surface could result in injury. Stripping down to just the bare necessities lets you to move faster but it may also cause your death if you aren't careful. Pack management quickly becomes an obsession It is an open world filled with well, not much. Be prepared for a whole lot of nothing except snow and trees and rocks. The graphics of the game are rather poor- think PS2 graphics. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not a graphics snob but there are some really bad looking things in this game. Like squared off rocks that look like they have windows, cloth that looks like bloodstains on a floor, and tree branches that are just long, skinny triangles. These aren't isolated items either...every branch looks like a long skinny triangle and every rock just looks stupid. I get that this isn't a big studio but there is simply zero polish on this game. Animal attacks are another cause for a quick demise if you aren't prepared. Wolves appear frequently and can easily cause significant damage or death especially if you get cornered. The higher the game difficulty, the more frequent and lethal they can be. They can get really old when you just want to explore an area. Some objectives, which are mostly fetch-quests are ludicrous, considering the game's setting and their aim for realism. You will find yourself traveling for days to accomplish a random task or obtain an item that may not even work. You can easily get killed just trying to find a key. It often feels like filler, especially in the earlier chapters. The game functions well for the most part but there are still glitches. At Carter dam I had to reset my game 3 times because a required event kept glitching. Also it is very easy to get stuck as your character is unable to jump. You can't even step over a tiny tree branch. Thankfully, you can increase the frequency of auto-save in addition to manually saving. The voice acting is absolutely superb. Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer (the female and male Shepard from Mass Effect) voice the main characters and they are a joy to listen to even if they are just making random comments about finding a can of beans. If this had poor voice actors, I really think it would have ruined the game. I mean it isn't much to look at, you spend forever walking all over the place for usually no good reason so if you had to listen to some boring voice actor, it would have done me in. Now, after saying all of that, I realize it sounds like this is an ugly, dull game that has good voice actors but somehow, it is greater than the sum of its parts. You feel compelled to keep going, even during the most boring parts. You want to move to the next area but when leaving, you actually feel a sense of nostalgia. It's weird especially since some of the people you interact with are mostly jerks. So, overall I would recommend this game but its definitely not for everyone. This game is for people who don't mind what is basically a walking simulator with an interesting story. You get little bits and pieces of the plot and nothing more. The voice acting is great but the graphics are certainly not. You wander an empty, bleak landscape but then see a tiny shack in the distance and you will go out of your way to get there only to find a fishing hook and nothing more. Even though you get burned time and again, you still always want to see what is in that shack and I still don't know why. You are at a disadvantage through the entire game. One wrong move and it's over. Carry too little and die of exposure or from injury. Carry too much and sprain an ankle or wrist just walking up a hill and move at a snails pace while wolves move in. This game is boring and interesting and tedious and ugly and wonderful all at the same time. Good luck.
