My back teeth are really close together and difficult to floss using just my fingers or with other floss holders. Start by wrapping the floss a couple of times around the button then run the floss up one prong (or finger) of the holder, across to the other prong and then back down to the button and wrap about three times. Always wrap the floss in the same direction around the button and it will be easy to remove by unwinding when you are finished. I've found it helps to pinch the holder and floss just above the button between my thumb and forefinger - keeps the floss tight. Review: Glad I found it - Having fairly bad peridontitis, I was getting scolded by my dentist because of my continuous high plaque scores. So I hopped onto desertcart to see if there was a device that would do away with my clumsy style of manually flossing with my fingers. I was convinced enough by the reviews of the Flossaid so I decided to buy 3 3-packs. I gave 8 to relatives and kept one for myself. This Flossaid is really great. Initially I had some difficulty manouevering it, but after practicing in front of a mirror, I have gotten the angles right. The Flossaid is sturdy and reaches all the spots. Mine is only about 3 weeks old. The only thing that could go wrong is if the wheel stops holding the floss tightly. With proper care, it should last years. I can really get down into the sulcus (gum between teeth), up and down the opposing sides of my teeth and with a bit of a twist, I get a fair amount of the cheek side and the tongue side. Don't rush flossing. Go slow. I takes me about 20 mins or more to make sure I do a thorough job. I know when my teeth are really flossed now. My only complaint is that they should separate the attachment points for both ends of the floss. Sometimes the ends tangle up around the wheel, and takes a while to undo the floss and move it over. Attachment points near the end of each prong would save some floss and be easier to move it over. Overall a big boost to my oral care. My last plaque score three days ago was 17% and my dentist gave me a pat on the back. I think I can still do better than that. Don't assume kids will floss properly, you need to use the mirror approach and make sure they scrape the full length up from the base of tooth surfaces and not just side to side scraping on the gum line. I definitely recommend this product. I personally advance the floss only when it breaks, because I really don't see a need for a "clean section of floss." The purpose of flossing is to loosen/remove/mechanically disrupt food particles and bacteria, and a used section of floss does that very well. **Q: be real with me... what is calculus buildup?** A: Dental hygienist (17+ years) here- "calculus" is the clinical term for what the public thinks of as "tartar"- it's rock-hard, calcified plaque. It builds up when plaque isn't removed completely from teeth- the proteins in the plaque combine with enzymes and minerals in saliva, and calcify to teeth. Calculus cannot be brushed away with a toothbrush- it must be removed with instruments in the dental office. They work well and are more convenient than using my fingers and more environmentally friendly than single use flossers. They could use some improvement, however. They are larger than I expected; rather cumbersome actually and could probably be 1/3 smaller and really work beautifully. Really, how large a mouth do they think we have? I've also had some trouble getting the floss to stay taught and not come loose while in use.
