Recent issues with an approx 25 yr old sodium vapor light.  Light was going on and off at night...off for a bit..then it would relight.  First replaced the photocell...did not help....old one was about 4 yrs old.  Then replaced the bulb.  Seems to be fixed.Old bulb was also a Philips...maybe 10-12 yrs use (a guess).  The metal base had a crack in it....and the bulb was discolored some.  New bulb puts out a lot more light.  The mogul base bulbs are harder to find now?This is the 3rd bulb and the 4th photocell.  I would recommend using some caulk on the outside edge of the photocell (just an inch or so) in order to prevent it some coming loose over time and falling off.  PITA to have this kind of issue up on a pole....my light is accessible from the roof though.*24000 hrs life = around 5.5 yrs.  Not sure my light has a "ballast"...this is common for fluorescents (CGLs)...my light probably runs off of line voltage.
