My cat didn't like the metallic taste of that one. This unit is easy to clean, quiet, and filters out contaminants fairly effectively (keep in mind none of these fountain filters kill bacteria). I do find it interesting the other cat mate fountain claims to be BPA free and this one makes no such claim, so I guess this one has BPA in it? I dunno. Nevertheless, I like it. It's cheap and the pumps in these units last forever. The motors on my old pet mates that were identical to these never failed and they were used for like 10 years. I replace the water every day (bacteria, see above), and clean it once a week. I soak the filter in a solution of alcohol and water and they spray it out with water. I can usually get a month out of the filter doing this. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Really helped my cat increase fluid intake *by J***N on January 19, 2020* The media could not be loaded. Bought this for my 15 year old cat who is now an indoor cat much to his dismay. He was regularly flipping his water bowls which is why I bought this unit. He refused to drink from it for 2 days. Now he loves it. One review said the cat can move the unit. But it holds 10 cups of water in the base when it's not running so it's pretty heavy. I also put it on a skid proof mat. Once it is running, the top probably holds 2 to 3 cups of water. I am refilling it with 2 to 3 cups of water every 2 to 3 days. Very easy to assemble, small footprint and the motor is unbelievably quiet. I only gave it a 4 on ease of cleaning because I haven't disassembled the pump thing to clean that yet. That doesn't need to be done for a month.5/2020. So I've been using this for awhile now. It's great. Easy to clean. You do need white vinegar to clean the little motor. You also need a tweezer to pull the magnet out of the motor casing. I change the filter once a month. Every three days, I rinse the whole unit out and rinse off the filter. A lot of food particles build up inside. I never noticed that when I was using just a water bowl. So I think the flowing water is rinsing out his mouth. That's a good thing. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Great improvement over other models *by B***N on May 29, 2021* Used to have the smaller / lower petmate fountain which I had originally considered top of its class as far as pet fountains. With multiple cats, we more frequently had to top it off and change the filters before we discovered this larger model.The increased capacity is advantageous not only as you don’t need to fill up / top it off as frequently, but also having a larger body of water in the reservoir, it takes longer for it to get dirty.The larger reservoir also allows for running one or two filters at a time. I run the older style filters (which are available elsewhere on Amazon, both OEM and aftermarket), two at a time, and we’re able to go a couple weeks before having to change the filters out.Biggest pro though is ease of cleaning. The older, smaller model we owned had many recesses and cavities that would pool with water while running in the dishwasher, so I had to drill some strategic holes to allow that water to drain while running in the dishwasher. This newer, larger model separates much more easily and doesn’t have the complex cavities that are harder to clean. It breaks down easily to be tossed into the dishwasher and can be filled from the faucet without spilling.Added bonus, the additional height is perfect for an older cat that might have trouble bending down to reach a lower water dish.All in all, this is the best cat water fountain I’ve found to date. There’s no gimmicky bells and whistles to break.
