    Good product - IF...

This video review is for a Metra 99-4505. I am using this adapter for installing a single DIN radio into a GM 1.5 DIN hole that is a common size for many GM vehicles.I looked at both Metra and Scosche adapters. I wanted an adapter where the radio would fit in the middle of theopening and not sit on the top or bottom. Some of the other adapters have an slot for an EQ and the radio sits above it, which I did not want. Without an EQ it looks like something is missing and you didn't buy some option that was available.A few features about this adapter. First the radio 'sticks out'. I like this for my application because my radio has a fairly small display and it gets closer to me and I can see it better. Also, it gives a good bit of clearance behind the radio to fit wires and the chassis has room and it is therefore fairly well ventilated, an important thing if you use a head unit with a fair amount of power. Also, it is black which fits most cars. You could paint it easily to match your interior. I was planning on that but couldn't find a paint color to match my dash. Now this adapter comes with very little. Download the PDF and you will see exactly what you get. Specifically this part of the instructions got me... " Mount the Metra bracket(s) OR factory mounting bracket(s) to the Radio Housing ". OK, here I assumed mistakenly that I had the "factory mounting bracket" since my car was completely stock. The brackets pictured on this page of the pdf were exactly what I needed but are NOT included in the package and the pdf does not say they are included on the page that says what is included.Soooo. I had to dremel/cut the metal brackets off of my existing radio, drill custom holes in the radio housing, find screws and dremel the brackets so they would fit the holes because they were now too wide by the width of the radio housing thickness. That took a while. Spend the extra $5 or $10 on a kit with brackets and save yourself hours of measuring, cutting and drilling. Unfortunately I cannot provide the exact model like this with brackets included because there are simply so many offerings and this was the one that looked closest to what I wanted. I could not find one with the same radio housing that INCLUDED brackets! Ugh!OK, so you slide the sleeve into the faceplate and bend the tabs back to secure it on the opposite side. Then you slide your radio into the sleeve, screw the housing into the car and you are good to go.Only complaint once installed is that the bright silver metal sleeve shows around the edges of the radio which mostly come in black. This is partially a complaint of the radio itself which I will do a review of as well. The trim plate that comes with the radio really should be a bit bigger to cover it. I painted my silver metal sleeve black so it wouldn't be so obvious. Also if the radio fit tighter into the sleeve it would work better. I can slide the radio into it tighter and click in a couple of extra tabs that stick out of the radio but then the faceplate does not fit. Haven't figured out if I blame the radio or the adapter for that one.So as far as the rating, if I had the correct brackets and the radio fit perfectly I would give it a 5 out of 5. I didn't so I will give it a 4 out of 5. I blame most problems with it on installer error (me!) or having the wrong product or the radio itself. It is sturdy, fits perfectly in the hole and the radio is nice and solid in there and doesn't rattle or shake.I would suggest going to Metra online site and you can put in your vehicle and it will tell you what they have that fits and then buy it here. Looks like 99-3300 would have done the trick better for me.

    No mounting tabs....

*by T***S on Reviewed in the United States on September 16, 2011*

Got this item and there weren't any mounting tabes that mount to the factory locations for the radio. Fashioned some out of an old set of brackets I had laying around the garage...Other then that...it is what it is...Wish I would have gone with the flat panel version instead of the one that has the bump-out.
