The only reason they do not get five stars is because the version of windows these computers come with is not activated and does not have a product key. So to know the true cost you must tack on the price of a windows product key. Right now, a windows key runs at $119 making this a $240 computer. These are reliable, but more expensive than they seem at face. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Enthusiast device in disguise *by K***. on Reviewed in the United States on May 11, 2015* I would actually call this an "enthusiast" device, although looking at it you may not draw that conclusion. This is because of the OS it comes with expiring in 30 days. You could just buy a key to make it work. That's the easiest way. Although there are competing devices that come with full versions of Windows for the price of this device plus the cost of a key. Which kind of defeats the purpose, unless you're primary reason for buying this is for the form factor.So, if like me you bought this for the appeal of the cheapness as well as the formfactor (actually I liked the idea of the physical Ethernet port which the HDMI "compute sticks" don't seem to include) but still don't want to pony-up for a key prepare for a time investment and adventure into how-to-install-other OS territory.I didn't think there was any reason to setup the Windows that came with this since it would expire in 30 days anyway. So I found a copy of Windows 8 and installed that, wiping the hard drive. Except (woops) this device has no official web page/support of any kind so I can't simply download the drivers. And also the copy of Windows I installed wouldn't activate either.I tried a few different options (couldn't get Windows 7 install media to work, had some issues with the Windows 10 tech preview) and finally settled on the 8.1 enterprise 90 day trial available from Microsoft. This installed without any issues. However there were a whole list of undetected devices in device manager. So I looked a while for the chipset driver (The atom Z3735f SoC always have the same chipset, like the wifi hardware is "RTL8723BS") and found some links to the "meego pad" drivers which as luck would have is literally the exact same hardware (found on XDA developer forums, if anybody else would need it).Once I finally got Windows working with drivers I decided to test what I really wanted: Steam "in home streaming". I don't think this streaming would be possible with a wifi-only kind of device. (For those unfamiliar: in home streaming is way to stream PC games from a powerful PC to another perhaps low-powered device over your home network. Like from a den or office to a living room with a gamepad/big TV for instance. Exactly what this Wintel would be made for in other words.)So far I only tested streaming with "Super Meatboy" at 720p (directly connected to router with Ethernet cabling) and it was quite playable. After about 30 minutes of testing the streaming this Wintel mini-PC was exceedingly warm. Another hour or so it probably would have shut itself off due to a thermal event. If you're enthusiast enough to get an OS up and going on this thing you may as well go the extra step and install a fan and/or heat sink.I haven't yet tried anything else this device may useful for like xbmc/kodi. I did notice the UEFI BIOS has a number of OS options including Android and Steam OS. I am not sure if that is a device specific feature or if all versions this UEFI BIOS (InsydeH20) just happens to include those options.I'm mostly giving this four stars because of the physical Ethernet port and for steaming actually working. The lack of a real OS kind of ruins it however. Just shipping with SteamOS or...some custom version of OpenELEC(?) would have made this so much better (to me anyway).I haven't actually opened this device up. If it actually some user-replaceable parts it might actually merit an extra star. Somehow I doubt this will be the case however. ### ⭐⭐⭐ ok the hardware is fine it performs good for what it is *by L***E on Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2015* ok the hardware is fine it performs good for what it is, the issue is that the seller does not send this product activated and their is no activation key with it. the key they use is XXXXX(withheld)-DX84C-26HCV-33KJB-CWD6W. that key is for OEM's to install the product only. it will not validate against Microsoft for registration. In new systems the key is only held in the firmware unless you upgrade so I went and checked the firmware and found no MSDM key installed (what you need to validate.) I do have to say big thanks to AMAZON as they stood behind me and made it right. Also due to the area the unit comes from MS will not allow online purchase of keys either.
