You may argue about the movie...but you can't deny this score!

Some of my favorite film music comes from the creativity of Michael Giacchino. I can remember hearing his work for the first time a number of years ago while playing "Medal of Honor" on the Playstation. Since then, there are a number of his pieces that have become my personal favorites. "Labor of Love" (Star Trek), "Married Life" (Up), "The Great Ape Processional" (Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), and "First Date Jitters" (Let me In) are just a few that occupy my Giacchino playlist.I started looking for this soundtrack when the movie was announced for it's first release date and it was a long wait when I discovered that it had been delayed. I honestly was looking forward to the score more so than the movie. I haven't seen it yet but judging from the previews it seems like it is mostly special effects eye candy. There is certainly nothing wrong with that if a good story can be found in it somewhere. I did know that this movie was aiming high and for the big visuals it was flashing...it was going to need a big score to go along with it. I can tell you that with out a doubt that this is a huge score. This is a gigantic orchestra with arrangements that are reminiscent of the classic epics of long ago. As a matter of fact, the first track made me think that I was getting ready to listen to Ben Hur part II. I certainly didn't mind that at all because the music is epic indeed. The first four tracks on the score are listed as "Jupiter Ascending - 1st - 4th movements". Even if there were no Jupiter Ascending movie, Giacchino could have expanded upon these and released a very beautiful symphonic album that could of taken you to any planet you wanted to go. The first four tracks set up everything for you. He gives you the powerhouse theme, magic, fantasy, and adventure through these movements. As if the gigantic orchestra wasn't big enough, Giacchino gives you a choir that would make Richard Wagner jealous. I saw another reviewer commenting that Giacchino could be a successor for Star Wars and after now having listened to this score...I do hear some strong John Williams influences here and I can see why they would offer such speculation. Giacchino would definitely make a good contender. The score is full of great action sequences that are easy to enjoy and do not become excessively noisy. His keen sense of how to use the percussion for these moments is key to their success as is the awesome sounding choir. I would love to have seen these artist in the recording studio working on this. They can really make the hairs on your arms stand up! Giacchino knows how to slow things down and give us some wonderful emotional themes as well. Peppered throughout the score, Giacchino gives you these moments that allow you to slow down and catch your breath. Not all are sappy love tunes either. Some move into some fine majestic sweeping pieces like that of track 10 (disc 1) "The Titus Clipper". There is plenty to be found here with this score for sure.Talking about plenty...the released score is huge too. I like to physically own my music so I waited until I could get a copy of the CD in my hands. I honestly didn't think I'd be able to get one because it was on backorder for quite some time. I was surprised to see that it was actually two disc and the total running time is 1hr and 44minutes. The CD insert is 8 pages and contains a few images from the movie and credits to the amazing orchestra and choir. Disc 1 has a picture of Mila Klunis and Disc 2 has Channing Tatum. It's great film music and although the critics and audiences will argue the merits of the movie...this score is awesome. I recommend.

    ODD STORY BUT SPLENDIDLY PRODUCED.

Here is another Warner Bros movie made largely in their big studio north of London. This seems to be becoming more common for studios to setup operations overseas; LUCAFILMS made the new STARWARS movie in England with primarily English cast. This movie had some amazingspecial effects though the story was a bit morbid. Action was first rate, and I love seeing films that use Chicago as a backdrop. Did you getlots of views of TRUMP TOWER in the background. Though I live in Staten Island for many years I still have fond memories of the Windy City.Outstanding cast, especially Mila Kunis who was as adorable as a young woman can be. Instead of having her play one of these "macho" damesrunning around beating up guys, she played a young woman caught up is a really unfortunate state of affairs. But there is a happy ending. Idid not know if I liked this movie or not until I watched it a couple of times. Terrific musical score accompanies this beautifully photographedcinema. You may have to watch this a couple of times to figure out what the hell is happening. But it all falls in place eventually. I loved thismovie and especially beautiful Mia. Move over Zooey, you got completion. I got my DVD from Amazon.. FIVE STARS!

An Epic and Grand Soundtrack for a New Sci-fi Saga

*by K***D on Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2015*

Michael Giacchino has gone to the extreme in scoring four large movies back-to-back, and then another drama later this year, making him one of the busiest and most-wanted composers right now, and for good reason. Giacchino's style always boasts a somewhat magical sound, and is always orchestral, with the smallest use (or no use at all) of electronic sounds/synth. Here, with Jupiter Ascending, this is Giacchino in full-form. Though, out of the four scores he has released already (Tomorrowland, Jurassic World and Inside Out being the other three), I'd rate Jupiter as his #2. And even so, it's still one of the best scores this year yet. While the movie may have bombed in the US (sadly, as it was a decent and boldly original sci-fi epic), Giacchino's score has been lauded and fully appreciated. What surprises me the most about his score, though, are his Four Movements on the first disc. These tracks were his foundation to create the rest of the music you hear, and honestly, I think they should have been included in the final film, as they were astoundingly epic! The Third Movement is the more action-packed one of the Four, while the Second Movement is the more somber and sweeping piece. My favorite track on the entire score, though, is "Commitment," the 10-minute long, epic choral-driven piece that ends the film, and also has bits of the First Movement within it, mainly towards the end.Michael Giacchino is, I would say, one of the best composers alive, and one of the best of all time. Every single one of his soundtracks has always been good, great or absolutely incredible, going all the way back to his score for the video game for The Lost World: Jurassic Park and to now, with the most recent release "Inside Out." Whatever he has planned next, there is no doubt in my mind that he will deliver in full.
