We primarily fish for Sail Cats where the mouth of a Florida Panhandle river empties into the Gulf. These are generally considered to be Saltwater Catfish as opposed to Freshwater Catfish. The bottom is a mix of mud, oyster beds and a few sandy spots. The water is subject to fairly strong currents while the tide is changing. We fish from shore. It's necessary to cast our bait about 100 feet in order to get into the main channel. Given these conditions, we generally use a 1oz coin sinker on 7 ft medium/heavy rods with 20 lb test braid line. That gives us the casting range and seems to hold well in mud and oyster beds. When the tidal current is very strong, we occasionally use a 2 oz sinker.
