Depending on the type of wood, they struggle to cut through something an inch thick, but the blades don't bend or spread apart--you just have to add more effort to make the cut. The steel-on-steel bumpers transmit a lot of impact shock, which results in quick arm fatigue, so these would be a bad choice for a big project. They're a good choice if you need to occasionally prune branches that are slightly too thick for pruning shears--they go through 1/2"-3/4" branches with ease.
