Now, like fine wine, I find myself seeking out whiskey for its nuances.This book is a showcase of some of the styles of whiskey produced in America.Although very light on the technicalities of how whiskey is made in general, this book is more of an exploration of certain distilleries. It is quite hard to write about something that really must be tasted, so it does a great job with the photography.Though this book can't please everyone, it does offer a representative sample of popular sellers from each state. Indeed, my state's offerings were underrepresented, but this is more of a tourist's tour. It covers whiskey's history, followed by an introduction to the craft movement as it is called. Essentially, some producers want to reproduce pre-prohibition whiskey on a craft level. Many of these producers find themselves rapidly moving out of craft territory into commercialized production.There is a chapter on 100 whiskeys you should try. I found the summaries here very blunt in some cases. Dominic Roskrow isn't light on his opinions when it comes to some of the offerings. Not much data is presented to gauge how a whiskey actually became one of these top 100 either.There is a chapter on the best whiskey bars. I went to one in Southern California (not LA) which was extensive and excellent yet I didn't see it on the list. This is just a representative sample, kind of like those "best restaurants in America" ads you see in the in-flight magazines.Chapter six is an anemic take on craft whiskey cocktails. I would prefer a purist approach here for the naming. There are good recipes here but some localized favorites are missing.A rather extensive directory lists contact information for the features brands.Overall, I retain 5 stars on the rating because I did find this an interesting and well-photographed introduction to the various whiskey brands across America. I have a similar tome on Tequilas and they now sit together on my bookshelf. I'd recommend it to the whiskey aficionado. Like most other hardcover books these days, it is produced without the benefit of a dust jacket. That said, it has a very good looking and enticing cover. It's the size and shape of a text book, and just as heavy. The high gloss pages are jam packed with full color photographs. There's a fairly brief discussion about the history and distillation of whisky, with the primary focus being on American craft distillation. A large portion is dedicated to a biography of many different makers as well as an extensive list of labels to try.
