Whatever happened to girls can play with trucks and boys can play with dolls?

*by T***S on Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2018*

Simplifying the idea of transgender, like this book does, leaves kids with the distinct notion that if they like pink and princesses maybe they are not a boy at all, maybe they’re a girl. Maybe they are “trapped in the wrong body” maybe they have a “boy body” but a “girl brain”. This is directly, and explicitly, in this book.Introducing this idea, planting this seed, is dangerous. This book is read in schools to kindergarten age kids. There are so, so many kids (myself included) who don’t (or didn’t) follow gender stereotypes. This does not mean they are “born in the wrong body”.Feminists have been fighting the whole concept of pink and blue brain for a long time. This is idea of a pink/blue brain is not accepted by the scientific community. It’s just sexism repackaged for 2019. It has been used many times throughout history to say that woman can’t, or shouldn’t, do XYZ because they have a “pink brain”.What kindergartners need to hear is girls can play with trucks and boys can play with dolls. It does not matter. Play with what makes you happy and do not make fun of others for their choices. Instead, this book says if you are a boy who plays with dolls you might be transgender.

    Disturbing

*by I***S on Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2018*

Wow. I am shocked by the positive reviews of this book. Read this to a classroom full of young kids? Read this to your children as a bedtime story? Let me summarize this book for you. “I used to be a boy but I liked cupcakes and rainbows and sparkly pink so I was really a girl (in my brain) so my parents let me turn into one!” That’s not dangerous at all for a young child who doesn’t follow the gender stereotypes of our society. And please, local librarians, stop being sell-outs and putting this out on display like it’s some amazing piece of children’s literature.

    Reinforces Gender Binary and Stereotypes

*by E***T on Reviewed in the United States on October 6, 2019*

As a mom of a transgender child, I have spent hundreds of dollars buying books to talk about this subject. I was really disappointed when this book came! My two biggest complaints are that this book reinforces the gender binary (you’re either a boy or a girl) and uses ridiculous gender stereotypes (like “Now that I’m a girl I don’t play with trucks”). UGH! This seems really outdated for 2019. I think the idea of a girl trapped in a boy’s body is way out of date. I did not even read this to my kids. I think, sure, depending on your exposure to the LGBTQ community (ie this book is your first foray into this topic), this could be okay...but...also kind of harmful to perhaps your kid and the non-binary community in general. I also try not to read books about the negative things or people being mean. It’s not that I’m not sure that my kids will encounter that at some point, but depending on the age of your kid, you may not want to immediately introduce the topic of “what mean things might happen”. I think there are newer, better books out there. I haven’t found the perfect on yet, but this one is going back to Amazon.
