First and foremost, the ability to adjust the angle of the sharpener is incredibly valuable. Also I specifically bought this sharpener because it DOES NOT have a carbide shaper. I've used carbide in the past, and it just destroys knives. It's quick and easy, but for the love of god it just decimates your cutting edge. The "coarse" diamond sharpener is great for taking out small nicks in the blade but it is by no means "coarse" and the fine ceramic sharpener put a paper slicing edge on my pocket knife blade made of D2 tool steel. You can actually see the difference in the edge at the last 7/32" of my blade. The sharpener is just a little too wide to be able to sharpen that section.
