There is a fixed shelf in the middle and three adjustable shelves so you end up with three shelves at 12 inches high and two shelves at 18 inches (or one at 12 and another at 24.). I bought this as a bookcase so I really want six shelves at 12 inches. (You can get another shelf from Amazon for about $45.
