## Questions & Answers

**Q: Does WD MY Cloud Mirror include the hard drives when purchased?**
A: Yeah, I fell for it, too. I thought I was getting 2x 4TB drives -- and it is TB, btw...not gb (which is 1000x less). I found it's only 2x 2TB drives. I believe you can change the Raid to 0, though...which will stripe data across both of them and you'll get nearly 4TB of storage. The only downside to this is if one fails, you lose the data on both. Make it more fun then...and add a 2nd one to the network and have them back each other up =)

**Q: I'm not completely clear..is the 4TB, 4TB of total storage (2x2TB) or (2x4TB)? ...It is misleading the way it is marketed/listed in my opinion.**
A: It is misleading. Because "Mirror" is in the product name, it's easy to assume that the 4TB model is 2x4TB. What's worse is that the dual bay version is a lot more expensive than the single bay version. This reinforces the confusion.

**Q: So is it correct that the usable storage is only 1/2 the advertised capacity due to duplication? e.g. 4 TB model only has 2 TB available?**
A: I would strongly discourage you from striping the drive (Raid 0). The whole point of a secure backup is to have a secure backup, Since RAID 0 provides no fault tolerance or redundancy, the failure of one drive will cause the entire array to fail. I learned the hard way. As a pro photographer where I value both speed and redundancy now I rather spend the extra money and get a 4 hard drive system where I can have both worlds (RAID 01, or 0+1). If you really want a fast performance but still care about a solid backup, although you don't need to back up that often than I suggest RAID 0 plus a backup on Blu-Ray disks. I like to use Double Density BD and I can store them in a place completely different than my main residence. BD have 100 years life span.

**Q: What is the difference between My Cloud Mirror and the My cloud EX2 products?**
A: I have not made my decision on either of these as well, since I am doing my research on the diffs.this is what I found.http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/Flyer/ENG/4178-705183.pdf good break down of the differences. I am very technical, and I wont need the 3 additional features.and http://support.wdc.com/product/install.asp?level1=9

## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Once Setup Properly, It Has Worked Flawlessly
*by R***N on November 4, 2015*

I purchased my Western Digital 4TB My Cloud Mirror Personal Network Attached Storage almost nine months ago. I was a little unsure because there were many negative reviews that in my opinion were somewhat serious but not enough to stop me from trying.I received the unit and it installed rather easily. I immediately was able to see the unit in Windows Explorer. I was able to connect to the unit’s web interface. All looked great. I loaded the free backup software started my first backup. The backup kept failing. I could not figure out why.I called the technical assistance. He requested and I allowed him to see and manipulate my laptop. He discovered I had several registry settings that were wrong. Once everything was set up correctly; the backups started. Since I had two large hard drives to backup, this would take some time. The next day, I noticed that the backup was not complete and had stopped and would not start. I called again, and let this representative onto my laptop. He rechecked all the registry setting, and then the software backup software settings. After going from continuous to scheduled and back a few times, the backups started again. Unfortunately, the next day, the incomplete backup would not start again. Another call resulted in the same actions by the representative and the backups started again. The next day, again the backup was not running, I checked the backups and they were complete. I noticed that the lights on the system would start flashing. I checked the software and saw that the new files were being backuped. Now, I know that registry settings needed to be changed. I am not sure if the starting and stopping was software or just my and the representative setting changes within the software was the problem. Since those early days the software and the unit has worked flawlessly. It has saved me several times when I mistakenly deleted the wrong file. I liked that I could go into the unit with Windows Explorer, find the file and copy it back without having to go through the restore software. Two months ago, I purchased a new laptop. I discovered that I could not restore the files to the new computer, or, if I could, I could not discover how. Well, Windows Easy Transfer solved that problem. Now the question was how easy would it be to start backups on my new laptop that runs Windows 8.1. My old laptop used Windows 7. I installed the software and set it a new backup that was set to continuous. Almost immediately, the lights started to flash and by the next day, the backup was complete. The new files are being backuped. In other words, the system is working as advertised.I have not upgraded my new laptop with the free upgrade of Windows 10 so I do not know if the software will work with that operating system.Otherwise, the system has worked flawlessly once set up properly. The initial help found and corrected my first laptop’s configuration problems. Therefore, I give this unit a five start rating.30 Jan 16 UpdateWestern Digital still states on its website that Windows 10 is not supported, not that it will not work. On the WD forum, users have reported that it has work flawlessly and others have had problems. Well, I upgraded to Windows 10 earlier this week. I did not see any lights flashing for a few days. I opened the WD backup software, regular not the pro version, and the backups were reported as being up-to-date. I have my backups set to continuous. I changed to hourly and forced an immediate backup. The lights started blinking. The software confirmed that. I repeated that process for all my backups and returned them to continuous. I am happy.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Works as Described; Difficult Install, Problems With Earlier Versions of IOS
*by T***U on September 7, 2014*

I recently purchased this unit to allow the members of my household to easily exchange files, and to create a personal cloud which would enable us to access our data remotely. We will not trust our data to commercial cloud applications; we want to manage our own security, and control where the data is physically stored. I have had some experience with network storage in a business environment, but no previous experience with a personal cloud device. This device is small, reasonably well made, and much to my relief, almost completely silent. There is no detectable fan or drive noise even from a distance of three feet to the unit.It is my impression that the installation instructions are less than adequate. WD has obviously tried to make the installation of a complex device as simple and automated as possible, but instead they have left many questions unanswered. To make things worse, it was very difficult to find the manual. A number of the links purporting to be a manual either did not work, or were not the correct document. An Email to WD requesting information as to where the manual could be obtained has been unanswered.Even when completely installed, it was not exactly obvious exactly how the device worked, and how to access the data. It was not as well-integrated with the desktop on my iMac as I wanted, although eventually I got it to work pretty well by trial and error, and much study of the web-based administrative tool. The desktop cloud application for the Mac is pretty good, but I was disappointed to find that the iPhone/iPod mobile app DOES NOT INSTALL on the devices running anything prior to IOS-7. You cannot upgrade and iPod touch 4th generation to IOS-7, so if we want to use this system with that device we will have to buy a new iPod! We were able to install the app on our more recent iPad mini, and I found it to be serviceable, but I think the interface is a clumsy and not very intuitive.Having worked through the installation issues (2 days), I am generally satisfied with this system, and it appears that it will meet our needs, but I would like to see better guidance for installation and use.
