It is not in contact with water. The fabric is tough and yet it allows water to flow easily through it. I used it as a soil separator by wrapping it completely around the rock and drainage lines. This should keep the soil from eventually mixing up with the rocks and plugging up the drain. Only negative is it is hard to cut with regular scissors. I found some $10 scissors at harbor freight that work great. Note that it does not come in rolls like some pics show. It comes folded but shouldn't be much of a problem. I am 73 and installed my own water feature and used this product to put between the dirt and the rocks I put along the sides and edges. It was easy to handle and I easily cut it to size. I thought it would tear when I put the rocks on it; but I was surprised that even with 50+ lb rocks with sharp edges, it did not tear. We have had many severe rain storms and the fabric holds the dirt under it well.
