I selected it because I'm in a college Spanish 201 course and was looking for the best-reviewed of the lot, and this was it, and I was not disappointed!As detailed in the product description, there are over 80,000 words - quite a lot! I've had to turn to it rather often (Hey, I never said I was -good- in the class) and it has not disappointed yet. Then again, I'm still learning, so I'm not searching for anything too obscure or technical. The dictionary is quite up-to-date (or at least, as far as dictionaries go - they do evolve rather slowly.) However, it didn't include only words and their translations, it provided quite a thorough introduction to Spanish grammar as well! Careful perusal of this dictionary could probably take the place of a Spanish 101 course (and a bit of 102), something I'd wish I'd known a year ago!Also helpful is the ability to look up conjugated verbs - sometimes they can look very different from their root words! Also included are reflexive verbs, and how they change the meaning. Furthermore, for more common or more complex words, this dictionary will include sample sentences, as many words can change meaning based on how they are used.One thing to note is that only the English side of the dictionary includes IPA pronunciation - for the Spanish side, you'll need to trust your Spanish knowledge (so, maybe not a complete substitute for Spanish 101.)On the technical side: The book is well-bound, though it's quite wide so if you find yourself on a certain page very often the spine might not hold well for more than a few years. As with most dictionaries, the font is small, so you may find yourself squinting, or pulling out the magnifying glass if your reading-vision isn't quite up to scratch.Bottom line: A strong supplement to Spanish coursework, or even travel in a foreign land, this dictionary sets the bar for all others, in the opinion of this reviewer.PS: Reading other reviews, I see that this dictionary seems to skip over vulgarity, or include words that may be misinterpreted based on the region. Deserves 5 stars. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Great Resource! *by D***A on April 9, 2012* Merriam-Webster's dictionaries are known throughout the world for their thorough and researched presentation; and this is no exception. The Merriam-Webster's Spanish-English Dictionary is an indispensable aid for anyone who is learning Spanish and also for the ones who speak it natively but are new to an English-speaking environment.The dictionary has got separate sections for English>Spanish and Spanish>English translations\meanings which are quite detailed and well worked-out, apart from the fact that vulgarities and profanities have not been included. The dictionary also has some very handy lists at the end, such as Units of Measurements, Countries of the World, Numbers, along with Days and Months.The biggest shortcoming of this dictionary is that it fails to provide pronunciation guides for Spanish words, I think it was critical to include them as the dictionary feels incomplete without them.
