Review: OUTSTANDING BOOK - This book is outstanding!! It offers so many practical suggestions that have helped to make me--a new teacher who will be entering her first year in the classroom this fall--feel MUCH more prepared for the school year. I initially sought out a book on classroom management because leaving student teaching, I had more questions than answers and was looking for help, and this book gave me exactly what I was looking for and more. In his book, Fred Jones talks about the day to day disruptions of the classroom, how to keep a level head and react to situations appropriately, and what to do in extreme cases. He also talks about how to prevent problems in the first place by constructing a well managed classroom environment. Jones comes from an extensive background in clinical psychology, and it shows in his book. Not to mention that in addition to being highly informative, the book is simply fun to read! Honestly, I still have two more chapters to read in this book, but I couldn't wait to write the review because even if the next two chapters are a complete flop, I have gained so much from the rest of this book that my rating would not change. I am also reading the popular "The First Days of School" by Harry Wong (I'm about 2/3 of the way through) and I think that Tools for Teaching is much better. At this point, I'm only reading The First Days of School just to feel in the loop, but I think that for anyone who has completed a teacher preparation program, you won't find much information in that book that you don't already know--unless the last 1/3 of the book takes a big turn. Bottom line, I think that Tools for Teaching is an incredible book, and is a must read for anyone who is looking for specific classroom management strategies. Thank you, Fred Jones!
Review: This is an excellent, chock-full of practical advice book for any teacher ... - This is an excellent, chock-full of practical advice book for any teacher who has been frustrated by students who seem to disrupt teaching and learning. As a substitute teacher, I've had to deal with students who try my patience because I'm a sub. As a sub, I've seen how quickly discipline can deteriorate due to poor ways of dealing with unfamiliar students. But the book has been heaven-sent. I have used the methods suggested and I've been impressed not only by the change of behavior in my students, but also of my growing confidence in maintaining classroom discipline. Now I spend more time teaching instead of spending precious time dealing with defiant students. This is the best book I've found to help me foster learning among the students I see infrequently.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Common Sense
*by M***L on June 16, 2019*

A great book on classroom management - others have stated that it is mostly common sense and this is true. That is not to say it is not good advice. This book is more of an overview and outline for thinking about classroom management. There are specific strategies presented but as above it if you want an in depth, super detailed plan this is not it. I will definitely implement the ideas in the book but not all are possible. For instance two ideas presented are keeping kids after school or giving them prefered activity time. I know that many schools would not be ok with this approach although as Jones describes it the time IS ACADEMIC and IS NOT free time.
