It is longer than a standard rolling pin which I like, and the dough depth rings are very helpful. I don't know how I made my sugar cookies before I got this rolling pin. **Q: How wide is the actual rolling surface (i.e., minus the handles)? Also, how much do the rings cut into the width?** A: Hi Mike,Actual rolling surface is 13 3/8" Rings do not cut into the width at all, angle of the handle makes it very easy to roll with, even when using the 1/8 inch ring which is terrific for pie crusts and thin cutout cookies. I have had this fantastic "idiot : ) " rolling pin since 1983.......wouldn't use another. I have seen reviews that have said the rolling discs have cracked. Mine have not......However I do not wash them in dishwasher or soak them for any length of time. I have purshased them as gifts, and recipients have been quite pleased.....takes the guesswork out of rolling. The only negative I can think of is that there is an "O" ring that fits in a groove to hold the disc in place that can be a little frustrating to remove, to change discs (the picture shows all three together, but you really only keep one on at a time.)Hope this helps!
