Review: Battery life is good. I use Panasonic Eneloop rechargeables with great luck - I upgraded from the older 2000ish model. There were no longer maps available for that unit and memory was next to nothing. This is basically the exact same design with major upgrades. Tons of storage and fast processor. Battery life is good. I use Panasonic Eneloop rechargeables with great luck. Battery saver feature shuts off the screen and helps extend battery life. Bluetooth connects to my phone. Phone App from Garmin lets you share your location and real time movement to friends or facebook. Love that. These are some things I think are dumb. If you download PAID maps to the unit and it dies or you upgrade models the maps are not transferrable to the new unit. You have to buy them again. If you buy maps on memory cards then you can use them in any unit anytime. Here lies the bigger problem. The unit has one memory card slot. If you buy maps on an SD card that slot is now useless for additional storage. This bugs me. Overall it's a very rugged reliable gps...fast acquisition....easy to use. Highly recommend. UPDATE: I had to purchase the TOPO 24k maps on sd card namely because the trails were not accurate on the 100k topo map included or non existent and the topo 24k is routable as the 100k is not. Additionally the 24k maps are road routable as well... So you can use 24k maps to navigate city streets which is cool when you cell doesn't have a signal. Kind of a bonus. Been using this on the last dozen hikes I've gone on. Unit performs flawlessly. Extremely accurate. After you master the learning curve it's a pleasure to use. I've tested it side by side with an older 60 model and they are basically dead on the same. Make sure you update your firmware. I had an issue and had to reinstall the firmware to correct a miscalculation issue. Easy fix. Batteries last about 16 hours with the screen backlighting off. I've read the other reviews. Don't believe most of the gripes. Most are user error or misunderstanding of the features. Everything in the manual works for me. Highly recommend.
Review: Good solid gps - The unit and the desertcart customer service are both excellent. The unit does everything plus some of what I need and hasn't lost signal on me yet the several times I've had it in the field so far which is all I can ask of it. I ordered a 32 GB micro SD card and am good to go for what I figure will be many years excellent build quality and finish. The birdseye and the topo maps are very helpful and easy to use and the basecamp program it all syncs up to on the computer works great. Plan out where you are going download the map send it to unit and head out. I'd recommend this gps to anyone needing a good solid unit for a reasonable price I've had cheaper ones that I've returned after one day the extra cost is worth it and necessary in my opinion if you do any kind of wilderness hunting or hiking, biking etc I'd put my faith in the unit not only getting me in easier and logging my trip but getting me home safely to my family. Only feature I haven't tested is the waterproof claim I'm sure it is it seems sealed up expect it to perform. Ordered Wednesday afternoon picked up at my local ups store Friday morning with prime next day shipping and had it to test on the hunting trip I had planed for the weekend. Buy it and enjoy.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Will the 64st have some road capability along with the 100K topo? Also want to add 24k Mid atlantic, does unit have extra SD slot? is it micro?**
A: I have the 64s. The 64st only has the US 100k topos included. I have the Garmin Southwest and West 24k maps loaded. If you want ROUTABLE road maps for the WHOLE USA you can get the navigator maps from Garmin or use the free ones which I use from openmapchest.org. They are very good. I have ALL the maps loaded on the SD card at once and it is easy to switch between them. The unit does have a micro SD slot under the battery.

**Q: Will this also record your entire hike or trip? For instance the Map My Hike app for phones shows time, distance, and elevation once complete.**
A: Yes it will record the entire hike or trip. Important though is to clear the previous track before starting a new one, once you are at the start of your new trip. Then when you complete the hike/trip save the track with a fitting name so you can then load it into basecamp or the much more useful earlier version , mapsource.

**Q: Does this device have a distress beacon or other type of emergency locating features?**
A: Garmin does make a device now that has a fully functional GPS, with an emergency location feature, 2-way satellite texting capability (so you can text people on their mobile phones when you are out of mobile range), and also provides weather updates. It is called the inReach Explorer+ and retails for ~$450. However, along with its benefits, here are a few drawbacks. You have to sign up for either a monthly or annual communication plan (they range from $11 to $100 USD/mo depending on the features you want), it also has an internal battery that you'll have to recharge on long trips, and though it should last a while, I don't know if it can be replaced.

**Q: I have been told that this device will only use up to a 8 GB storage card. Nothing larger, it will not access the additional information?**
A: As long as it is a 'class 10' memory card it should work. Some people use up to 64gb cards with no problem.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good solid gps

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Outstanding Device but Outdated Base Map
*by J***. on January 31, 2020*

I love the GPS. I've had it out hunting and hiking and it's great. For me, the only downside was that the maps Garmin loads on it are out dated. My neighborhood is about 15 years old but doesn't appear on the maps (purchased Dec 2019). It's really better suited for off road, but it was annoying that the maps didn't include the local roads. After some research I found that there are far better and current open source maps that can be found online, downloaded, and copied into the GPS for use in the field or on the road. The more you use this GPS, the more familiar you will become with it. There are a lot of features and the instructions are not detailed. YouTube videos will help. I bought this rather than a newer model because of the rubber buttons. I didn't want a touch screen for concern of messing something up by simply touching the wrong part of the screen. This has menus associated with all the buttons and if you accidently hit the wrong button, it's easy to back out before doing anything that will jeopardize your navigation.
