Review: discontinued for a reason, insincerely supported - I bought the google pixel slate b/c I believe Google's security is superior. There's no great way to evaluate that quantitatively, afaik. It also seemed that $900 for an i7/16GB was a reasonable deal for the hardware, despite the device being discontinued. I also trusted that Google would stand behind this device since they've promised support past 2025, but in the last few months of owning I've learned that: 1. If you want the vaunted security, you have to run with hyperthreading turned off (default), negating a lot of the value of the hardware and settling for noticeably sluggish performance on basic things like opening gmail tabs (can be multi-second latencies for me, with outright failures sometimes). 2. It won't drive my external LG UHD display at 3840x2160 via the monitor's HDMI output. I've had to work around this by using an external Dell hub (+~$250) and plugging into the monitor's DisplayPort, but the performance is very disappointing as noted above. 3. Support is truly insincere: even after diagnosing the device as defective (due to the HDMI issue) and offering a return, the terms of the return include: a. even though I bought a new device, Google won't guarantee a new device in return; they may send a refurbished device. Since security is my primary reason for the purchase, that's unacceptable. Besides that, I paid full price for a new device, so I expect a new device to replace the defective product I was sent. Even after multiples email exchanges over multiple weeks, they've refused to guarantee a new device. b. even though their own support authorized the return after having determined their product is defective, the terms of the return reserve the right to charge me for a whole new (i.e., additional) device once they receive it (!!). Their support people ignored repeated email questions on this point. This alone makes it impractical to return any device to them, even if one were willing to deal with the 14 day period that they reserve to send a return. c. despite all this and after multiple exchanges, google support refuse to provide any compensation for their defective device, even in the form of partial store credit. They even refused to explain any of their policies. 4. This is above and beyond the documented issues (see reddit etc) about unlocking problems that cause the device to shut down multiple times a day, the sub-par tablet experience, the multiple UI/UX defects (ex: play movies won't play on an external monitor), etc. As a long-time Google user and fan, the experience with this device has made me reconsider the value of the Google brand and their commitment to supporting their customers, at least in their hardware business.
