I read that you can put the emptying tube into a container and just remove from tank rather then overflow. After a few days of overflow from skimmer to the socks I decided to try it. I emptied about a gallon in a few hours and then the skimmer was basically broken in. Another week to really dial it in. I have been leaving it rather wet in order to keep the main body clean. I just clean the collection cup every few days and it is way easier to do preventative maintenance like that then remove the whole skimmer once a month or several months even. The collection ranges from dark green/yellow to nearly black and smells awful when emptying however no bad smells in my office near display tank. Free Tip: use a zip strip with some foam filter floss on the output and you can get this skimmer to almost silent and no bubbles in return to sump.
