I routered out my grooves with a slightly smaller size drill bit at low rpm's and a near horizontal angle so as not to drill into the actual chair back. This is to make it pliable. But as I was pounding it into the channel it pulverized on the surface. Not enough to make unusable, but enough that I was displeased.To be fair, I did not time how long I kept it soaking. May have been too long. I have used another spline and it stayed intact.
