The plot is centred around the Shimogamo family - brothers Yasaburo (voice of Takahiro Sakurai), Yaichiro (Junichi Suwabe), Yajiro (Hiroyuki Yoshino), Yashiro (Mai Nakahara) and their mother (Kikuko Inoue), who are all tanuki, beings who can transform into humans, animals or objects. The boys' father was killed and cooked in a hot pot by the Friday Fellows, a social group of tengu, creatures who roam the sky. When Yasaburo meets Benten (Mamiko Noto), a human who was raised as a tengu, he is taken with her despite her association with the club. Elsewhere, Yaichiro, who hopes to be elected as the next tanuki leader, discovers one of his brothers may have been involved in his father's death. Have some more fun! *by P***Y on Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 7 December 2015* From my review of the series (note, I did not receive nor ask for compensation for including my own review): "The series centres around the fortunes of the Shimogamo family in modern day Kyoto. The Shimogamo consist of Yasaburo, Yajiro, Yaichiro and Yashiro and their mother. Their father died a few years before the series began but they carry on as best they can without him. Yaichiro wants to take the title of Nise-emon (community leader) that his father had before his death. Along with that, Yasaburo must deal with the mechanizations of his uncle, Soun Ebisugawa, who is more upwardly mobile in high society than the rest of the family. All while tending to the local Tengu (birdmen gods) master, Professor Akadama. Oh, and the whole Shimogamo family are all Tanuki, a kind of racoon dog, that can shapeshift into anything really."Eccentric Family is very set in how it wants to depict its characters and I would not recommend this for people just getting into anime. While it's got a lot of humour and fantasy, it requires some knowledge of Japanese mythology beforehand to get the most out of it (IMHO). I would, however, recommend this for viewers who've seen some anime, like it and want to see something different from the current examples streaming on legal sites at the moment. It's a great little adventure that won't tax you butThe set itself is wonderfully put together and MVM deserves full marks for putting together a classic box set reminiscent of the old ADV chipboard sets that really felt like you were buying something solid. The set uses the blu ray transfer from the US version put out by NIS America back in January 2014. (Note: the subtitles are burned on and cannot be switched off) Trailers for other titles and clean opening and closing animations wrap the whole thing up. It also copies their excellent hard backed booklet with interviews, character model illustrations and more.
