The straight handle is inline with your arm, so it's 90 degrees from the way your hand wants to grab it. Worked, but my wrist was sore as hell by the time I was done. Mine looks curved.** A: It is supposed to be straight I believe. The handle pieces have to slide into each other to collapse it down; the handle has to relatively straight to do that. **Q: will it measure over grass?** A: Yes, it will measure over grass just take your time. The unit is small and is made for shorter distances. The small wheel and mechanics inside would have to endure a phenomenal beating. I would think that to measure such great distances your would want a unit made for highway measurements such as the Keson RR318N (10,000ft) or the Keson MP401E (100,000ft). **Q: will it measure over grass?** A: Remember that any measurement over uneven bumpy terrain will add length to it. If the ground is level, grass will have only a small effect on measurement. Ideally used on concrete/paver surfaces. A bigger wheel is better when used on grass/dirt/rocks/etc. It's nice that you can roll the wheel back and the measuring wheel rolls back the feet/inches. A nice touch if you need to change the path of the project.
