    A trilogy in two parts!

*by D***V on Reviewed in the United States on May 7, 2022*

So the quality was listed as acceptable and for me it definitely is given how long I've been searching for this book! Was a bit confused when I picked up the package and felt two distinct moving bits. Thought maybe it was three separate books for a moment, being a trilogy I could see that, but it doesn't explain where the third bit is. Ever the optimist I figured mb it's small enough that I'm missing it, stranger things have happened. But for someone used to identifying the type and orientation of computer ports by finger tip it was unlikely. And yeah I wasn't wrong there were only two items. Seem kinda odd for a trilogy? I agree! Turns out the book broke in half at some point. It's a 15 year old printing of a 30 some odd (or even) year old book and looks like it was in fact well loved. If not the best cared for.Like I said, definitely was acceptable state to me, but I may get some supplies and turn it into a hardcover book sometime in the near future.

    Definitive Escapism

*by B***R on Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2011*

I enjoyed this book. It is your basic sorcery/fantasy escapism, and I really like that sort of thing. This is the first book by Eddings I have ever read, and am looking forward to reading more of his works. If you like fantasies that are set in the usual medieval surroundings (complete with castles, serfs, and vast stretchs of largely uncivilized land) you'll probably like this. If you like not having to worry too much about whether the main character will live to see the end of the book, and the fact that most of the bad guys will probably meet suitably grisely ends, you'll probably enjoy this. If you like swords, theives and beautiful queens, you'll probably like it. It's not going to change your life; you won't be inspired to be a better person and you won't have a sudden, deeper understanding of the world, but I think that's ok. Not every book needs to do that to be worth the read. If you want a way out of the world for a little while: maybe the bills are a little too high, or the family is getting to be a challange, or maybe you aren't feeling good, this is a good book to slip away with. After all, you can't (or, at least, probably shouldn't) drop everything and run. Responsiblities are important, but everyone needs a break. Is this the best of its kind I've ever read? No. The characters are good but not brilliant, the plot is interesting but not terribly unique. The romance is frankly ham-fisted, and, as another reviewer said, a teensy bit disturbing (I am never really comfortable with romances between young girls and the men that raise them, related or not, never mind the fact that the author never really convinced me that the hero was truly in love with the girl to begin with. You know she loves him, in the way that all teens love, and you know he loves her, but he usually seems to love her as a father loves a daughter, and when things progress, it's just hard to switch the gears)Thankfully, the romance is not the starring plot. Sparhawk is usually fighting or traveling rather than making love, and while I love a good romance (Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorites) I infinately prefer it this way in this book. This book is humourous, interesting, and ends satisfactorily. I'm glad I got it!

Got this book for my teenage grandson

*by C***N on Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2022*

I've read David Eddings and absolutely love his books. I've reread this series many many times and my grandson was wanting a good book. This book has knights, battles, magic, love, tragedy, betrayal, heroes and so much more. He throughly enjoyed it.
