What type of paint or ink might work?** A: Yes, I painted mine with acrylic paint and it looks beautiful and did not affect the playing. So happy with this drum. **Q: Can this drum be painted?** A: Hi, I am a graphic designer and artist and I have painted several of these drums with both acrylic paint and acrylic markers. (Some people use oil paint as well.) Sharpie pens can be used as well but acrylics have a higher lightfastness so I would recommend that. I use Molotow markers and Molotow UV acrylic varnish in matte to seal the artwork off - as a protection of the paint. Posca markers are also good. It is also a good idea not to totally cover the drum head and leave some space empty. Don't apply too much paint or it will dampen the tone. I created a 30 minute tutorial on Youtube how to paint the Remo Buffalo Drum, search for that if you want to see in detail how to do it. I hope this helps! I have not received any Remo drum mallets that are plastic. I have 10 or so drums now. The only reason for 4.5 stars is it came with what looks like a sharpie marking on the skin of the drum…I’m not sure what happened and assume someone accidentally drew on it while packaging the drum. If it didn’t have a funky sharpie marking on it I would definitely give it a 5 star rating!! Pictured is the sharpie drawing on the drum. I am a sound healer and currently have an elk skin drum that I use for sessions, but the quality of sound changes so drastically depending on humidity levels that it wasn’t reliable for a nice ringing rich tone. This one sounds similar but will not change due to temperature and humidity! I’m super excited to try it out in sessions and sound baths! *edit* I contacted the seller directly and they instructed me to exchange the drum and said that was very unexpected and should not have been sent to me in that condition. They were super helpful and I will be sending the drum back and getting a new one! Edit again: I got the new one really quickly and sent out the one that had sharpie on it! The new one sounds great and is in perfect condition!
