**Q: how does this work?**
A: when you make a hole and pass cables through it you take this and pass the firestop around the cables to cover the hole and it seals between the cables and hole.  I work in the IT department at a hospital and we have to either do this or cut a pipe to pass the wires through a wall and this is much quicker and easier.
