Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin are the filmmakers of this documentary. Jimmy Chin has been with Alex for ten years. He has filmed and photographed Alex 1,000 times on his solo climbs. Alex is a child of a father who had Aspergers and never had a hug, nor was he told he was loved. His mother is alive and well, why she did not hug is a mystery. Thus Alex found his life centered around climbing, extreme climbing. He had his brain imaged with an MRI which showed he needs much more stimulation to show excitement or emotion. And, then Sanni, a lovely young woman comes into his life, and he does find love. However, climbing free solo is his first love and El Capitan is to be conquered. As we climb with Alex it is an unbelievable sensation, and I had to look away several times. But, it is an enormous relief to see him summit. He summited in 3hours and some odd minutes, what a relief and feeling of joy. And, to top it all this documentary won an Oscar for Best Documentary. Wonderful, wonderful!
