I spent months on my project. What is important is to understand the differences between these chemical reactions. There are products that "dissolve" rust via chemical reaction. There are rust "converters", like this, that actually convert the rust into something stable. There are others that "encapsulate" rust. But in this case, you can actually see what it is doing. It goes on a purple-ish, milky color. It is thinner than the Rustoleum liquid version (not to be confused with the spray version which is a totally different product). You can "push" it into pits with a brush going "cross-grain". It will turn a dark, purple-ish black if it converts rust. If there is no rust to convert or there is a galvanized finish that is protecting the metal, it will stay a very white, milky, purple-ish film. However, Hammerite recommends that you grind that off before painting over it. You can see through the film even once dried unless it turns totally black. Often, I would see a copper-colored layer underneath. I am still not sure what that is. But what I found after months of testing is that even after using phosphoric acid-based dissolvers, vinegar and months of grinding to a shiny finish, this would still convert rust. I can't explain it. I ran out of time and put this stuff on some of the worst areas just before winter started to set in and to my amazement, those areas turn dark black - suggesting that there was still unseen rust. So this whole issue dealing with rust (on a van bed like my project) is totally bizarre. I can't explain it. But if you want to convert the rust to something stable, this is probably your best bet.
