Something about the built-in tamper-proof mechanism makes the original Ford mechanism delicate and prone to failure. Usually the lock barrel itself works fine, but the connecting mechanism fails, preventing the bonnet from opening.When my original unit failed I removed it from the car (helped by online videos) and (thankfully) kept it in a drawer, and for a while I just used a long screwdriver whenever I needed to open the bonnet.When I finally decided to replace the mechanism, I had no hesitation in buying an after-market replacement, given the fragility of the original. And I was very glad I had kept the original (broken) lock, for reasons I'll explain now...When it comes to replacing your bonnet lock, you have 2 main options:1) Buy one with a fully built lock barrel and two new keys. This is a quick and easy option, but you're stuck with carrying an additional key to open your bonnet,2) Buy one with a lock-building kit that allows you to build the lock barrel to work with your existing car key. Ultimately a good result, but requires hours of fiddly lock-building faff that can be off-putting.Keep your original (broken) mechanism though, and you have a great 3rd option...3) This is the easy option... Buy a replacement that includes a fully-built lock (this product!).The lock barrel in the lock mechanism is held in place by a couple of pins, and it's relatively easy to push these pins out to remove the lock barrel, then swap the old lock barrel in place of your new one.
