This unit makes a great variable power supply for hot wire foam cutting. This is perfect for my needs and it saved me a lot of money over buying a commercial hot wire cutter. This supply will heat a 32 gauge Nichrome wire about 3 feet long with no problem at all while giving you a perfect cut. That's the only gauge I've tested so far because it worked so well I didn't feel the need. I'm sure that thicker gauge wire will heat just fine as well. For shorter lengths of wire or thinner gauges just lower the voltage. The voltage reading does tend to fluctuate (very slightly) when its set to be under 10 volts. The display flickers a bit but it doesn't seem to be a problem and stabilizes just fine above 10 volts. I haven't had any heat build up in the supply either. All in all I think I've found the perfect unit for cutting foam. Not sure why another reviewer said the quality is bad.
