You definitely do need the tiny rubber spacers that come with each letter so don't throw them away!! The letters don't lay correctly without them. The spacers are ugly though and take away from the classiness of the letters because they are a white color. So just do what I did-I put them all in one of the small plastic bags and I sprayed silver spray paint on them! They came out beautifully and are the same color as the charms! You can barely see them in the picture.
